2 questions for you pros:

1.) Can I use a NAS over the internet so I can get data off of it from a laptop across the world?

2.) What parts do I need/should have? (PCPartPicker list would be appreciated :)

2a.) Can I just use whatever parts I have? http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Hmong_Xiong/saved/3HDj4D

1. Yes, but the only media thingy I've used is Plex.

2. If you want a separate computer just for NAS, whatever you can salvage lol

     2a. Yes and run Plex.

I agree with using Plex, it's pretty great. And as far as building your own NAS, It might be worth it to just buy a prebuild NAS like a drobo and just buy some drives for it.

I would recommend a dedicated NAS (Seagate, NetGear etc) because of the tiny foorprint compared to dedicated PCs. It's what I run.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the help.

EDIT: Plex lets me save all my stuff onto it right? So I can get the same data to two devices? The reason I ask is because I need more storage for all my devices so I don't have to fiddle with Dropbox or transferring docs/pics from my desktop to my laptop and etc.

Yes, but make sure its a mATX board. H97M-E would be good too.

If you get a NAS all your data will be stored on the NAS, meaning you should be able to access it all on a local network via dlna (or file browser depending on the NAS you pick) and should be able to access it over the internet as well (if the NAS you pick supports plex). You would need to put all your media and files on the NAS or else you can't access them from other devices.

So what benefits would a Xeon do that the i3 can't in terms of just transferring files, storing files, and copying files?

U think it's ok to downgrade the CPU to a Pentium? It seems to have the same specs with no hyperthreading which i can imagine that to be useless for a basic NAS
