Hello all....I know that the AM3 is not a popular processor but I need to what is the best gaming AM3 socket processor to go with. I was given a motherboard with the AM3 socket and want to start building on that board to use it for gaming. Please help...

The 8350 is a fantastic processor for gaming, especially if you overclock.  Don't bother with anything higher, as they are all the same chip.

what motherboard do you have?

because it supports the FX processors, doesn't mean the motherboard will

overclock well. before throwing good money away on something that isn't

desirable could make for a terrible experience.

lol I am still waking up. Give me a break.  :P woops.

I think that some AM3 boards got an update to work with FX chips but I really don't know too much about it TBH.

I expect that if they do they won't have the power to clock much...

Need to know the motherboard model and ideally the BIOS version installed.

So is the AM3 and AM3+ the same socket?

physically, yes, wired yes, functionality turned on, no. the AM3 uses 941 pins

to operate as the AM3+ (VISHERA) uses a 942 pin layout. so the motherboards

BIOS should be updated to use the 942 pin layout.

that is why we ask what motherboard was given to you?

List of compatible cpu http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A89GTD_PROUSB3/HelpDesk_CPU/. Note the different BIOS levels required for some cpu.

Ok....thats alot, which of all of those processors are geared towards gaming?

The best one there is probably the x6 1100t or the 8150, and to note the 8150 generally performed the same or worse.

No, to be precise, AM3+ CONTAINS AM3 with 3 or 4 extra paths for AM3+ chips.

AM3+ chips do not fit in AM3 sockets. AM3 chips will fit in the AM3+ socket.

1100T at 4.0Ghz would equal a 6300 at 5.2Ghz or so. The 8320/8350 would be better in multithreaded uses but the 1100T would be better in single thread use.

Either get a 1090T,1100T, or 8320.

It's 1 pin.

Some White Socket AM3 boards(mainly Asus 890 boards) will accept AM3+ CPUs just fine. They have both the socket modded and a bios update but most AM3 boards dont physically accept an AM3+ CPU.

So with that being said, would that be considered goid enough for gaming purposes?

1090T and 1100T would be good for most games, yes. Up to a GTX 770 or Radeon R9 280X you should experience no real CPU bottlenecks in most games, but a quick search on ebay seem to confirm that those CPU's sells for over 200$ on the internet...so if you don't already have one in hands, you should start looking at a core i5-4460 and an cheap H97 motherboard cause that would cost about the same and give you a lot better experience.

Total: $267.98
