Building a  hackintosh for no reason. Just to prove to my mom why macs suck. My brother wants a hackintosh too now though. I'm wondering if AMD will work or if i'll have to use intel. Here's the build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gjNqP6 Try to keep it under 600$USD. Do not include Operating system. Thanks a lot guys. Best tech forum eva!!!!!

As far as i know only Intel works, i think Teksyndicate and @LinusTech have some videos on the matter.

Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
They go to the lake of fire and fry, Won't see them again 'till the fourth of July

AMD processor? You could get it to work, but it's not officially supported. Some software won't work on it. Unless maybe you could trick it into thinking it's an intel processor, much like you would do with the model of the mac. If OSX detects a non intel processor, when you go to run or install software, it will most likely say this software is not designed to be run on this architecture.

And that would prove that macs suck, because you're running an operating system on a processor it wasn't meant to run on.

The problem with AMD Hackintoshes lies in the Mac OS X kernel. The kernel is a critical file that lets applications in Mac OS X communicate with the hardware of your Hackintosh. However, the standard kernel (known as the "vanilla" kernel) is only designed to support Intel processors.

To run Mac OS X on an AMD Hackintosh, you need a legacy kernel, which is a modified version of the vanilla kernel that works with AMD processors. Legacy kernels are version-specific; every version of Mac OS X has its own legacy kernel. For example, the legacy kernel for Mac OS X 10.6.7 won't work on Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Unfortunately, there is no legacy kernel for Mac OS X Lion. Development of the legacy kernel is done almost entirely by one guy, nawcom. Lately, nawcom has put all of his work on hold due to medical problems, so don't anticipate the release of a Lion legacy kernel anytime soon. If you want to install Mac OS X on an AMD Hackintosh, it will have to be Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

edit: here are some patched kernels, but it will make your hackintosh build that much more frustrating, especially if you've never done one. I've done a couple, and I've always used compatible hardware to simplify life.

If you want them to know why macs suck, buy a mac. Doing a terrible hackintosh build will only prove that terrible hackintoshs/pc builders suck.

I always guarantee that no more than 50% of what I say is useful.

AMD will work with a little work, but Intel would be easier. Why not go with a Pentium G3258 or whatever it was and overclock it? Then you can say you have an OC'd Mac :P

E: @mooseducks86 If he uses a distro of OSX like Niresh, it wouldn't be that hard. But as you said 3rd party software will be a different matter.

I've never heard of Niresh, I'll have to look it up.

Ehh, Imma try at least. Okay, now I can't get it to work on my computer. I'll select USB from the menu, it then flashes the apple logo, turns black, and then reboots. HALP PLZ
