Windows 8 Brightness problem?

hey guys.

I have a Acer Aspire 6935g, which i have installed Windows 8 on, and yes i know that my Laptop doesn't have support for windows 8(drivers)

My problem is that, i cant control my brightness level, i can see the brightness box come up in windows 8, but it does not affect my brightness level.

I have tried to do some research, and has downloaded programs, that can control the brightness, but they just make the screen look washed out.

BTW. Screen brightness level did work in windows 7.

Did you perform a clean install? I installed Windows 8 on my laptop as well (which HP doesn't provide Windows 8 support for), and everything, including stuff like the fingerprint reader, works just fine.

Software brightness level doesn't adjust the brightness of the backlight.. it just switches the image more black or whiter. It simulates it, if you will.

Also, adjusting colors via software creates banding on colors (loss of colors).

The proper way is to control the backlight.

They are 2 ways a laptop can do this:

-> Hardware level control (which is what Windows 8 brightness level uses)

-> DDCI/CI protocol. A protocol supported by the monitor panel. Some software support it, but hard to find.

In your case, the reason why Win8 doesn't support it, is because it probably uses DDCI/CI method. That means you need to install your laptop WIndows 7 drivers on Windows 8, and use the keyboard shortcut combination to change the monitor brightness.

i have installed the drivers from windows 7, via compatibility mode, and all off my shortcut keyboard combinations works very nicely. I have installed windows 8 as a dual boot with windows 7 if that helps.

Glad we could help.

The good news, is that now that Windows 8 uses hardware level control for the brightness level. Windows 8 ready laptops MUST use hardware level brightness control, and that means, that: yes it cost more for OEM to implement, but it means that the brightness level is OS independent. So if you put Linux, or Windows 9 or 10, or wtv, it SHOULD work via the keyboard, OS and no drivers needed.

  • 4 months later...

Hey guys, sorry to drag this thread out again but I've been having the same problem since ages ago. I have a laptop with a Radeon HD 6990M running Win8.1 with the latest Catalyst drivers. GoodBytes, when you suggested to install the original Win7 drivers that came with my laptop, do you mean the display drivers? As in, the original Catalyst drivers? I'd prefer not to do this since I won't be able to take advantage of the latest improvements AMD has made. But is this the only way? Thanks a lot!

I meant go to Acer website, and get your graphic card drivers for Windows 7, keyboard drivers, and any application/driver from Acer that might potentially be link to controlling the system special keys and brightness. An application like Dell Control Point.. but from Acer... (it's just that Dell doesn't do this kind of hardware design, they do it all hardware level, OS independent, and what Windows 8 brightness control supports, as most laptop manufactures and tablet use as method).
