I have wanted to play around with Linux for a while now but I have never been able to justify it really other than to just play with it. I still can't justify it but I have some money now so I am gonna get it pretty soon. I just want to finalise the build part drivers work well in Linux. Also I want some ideas for PCI X1 slots because there are 5 of them on the mobo I chose. I plan on doing a little bit of overclocking with the Intel anniversary Pentium also. Maybe a TV card would be cool.

Any improvements on my build will be appreciated. I don't want to go all out as I want this to be as cheap as possible.

Does that H81 motherboard allow overclocking?

Also that SSD is like the worst one you can buy.

can u even overclock on h81 with pentium i thought u still needed a z series board to overclock it :S

http://www.techpowerup.com/202196/asus-enables-overclocking-on-h97-h87-b85-and-h81-series-motherboards.html

Not necessarily for example ASUS allows overclocking on h81. Also you dont need a Z series to overclock, you can pretty much overclock on any motherboard at least to some small degree. And I know the ASROCK boards do as well

ASUS today announced that its H97, H87, B85 and H81 Series motherboards are able to overclock the latest Intel Pentium Anniversary Edition processor (G3258), 4th-generation Intel Core K Series ('Haswell') and new 4th-generation Intel Core K Series ('Haswell Refresh') processors. The combination of the Pentium Anniversary Edition processor and non-Z chipsets represents the best choice for mainstream overclocking, delving both great value and superb performance.

Hardly if you overclock it, it becomes a great performer. Plus it's the cheapest overclockable chip you can get.

agreed those ssds are perfectly fine, still 10000x faster than a HDD and with linux they will fly, I mean its £35 who cares

Yea it does have OC capability

http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/H81%20Pro%20BTC/index.de.asp?cat=Specifications

I think it might be a cut down BIOS maybe but I am not sure. It does have CPU multiplier though.

I still need some ideas for filling those PCI 1x slots. Maybe a RAID card but I don't see the point unless I was going to use it as a backup system perhaps. Digital PC tuner maybe but there are 5 slots so I really need some ideas. I wander if I can get a cheap QUADRO card for stuff.

If you wann oc you need at least like MSI 97 board with oc genie 4.

I found a Quadro card for multi-display stuff. I is passive 1 slot and has 4 display ports. The only problem is though is that is only has 512MB of memory which is probably going to be a problem. Does anyone know of a card like this that has more memory and is more powerful perhaps.

This would be perfect but it's way too expensive for what it is. Are there any cheaper alternatives around the £100 mark.
