What is the better GPU or are they pretty much the same?

Asus GeForce GTX 780 3GB DirectCU II Video Card ($599.00 @CPL Online)

and

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB Dual FTW ACX Video Card ($648.00 @ CPL Online)

I would rather get the Asus because of the price. I would rather not spend the extra $50, if it doesn't matter.

I think the asus is the better choice, especially when it's that much cheaper. Getting the other one won't give you any tangible benefit afaik. The prices in general look a bit high to me though, have you considered that you could probably find an r9 290 for much cheaper? If you can find one, I suggest you buy that one, it's better at higher resolution and even at lower ones it's pretty much on par with the 780.

Well I would get the Asus one and overclock it. The DC II cooler is very nice and a I quite like it and should keep the card cool while overclocked  :)

You're comparing two cards that aren't really in the same range.. the Asus GPU is their factory OC DCUII version while the EVGA GPU is their Dual Bios FTW focused on extreme overclocking version. The EVGA GPU that is in the same range would be this one: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-03gp42784kr .

Sine it's only $9 cheaper than the Asus one in AUS (that sux..) you could go with the FTW and it would be the better overclocking card. The Asus is great too tho and obviously cheaper, your choice.

I can get the Asus R9290-DC2OC-4GD5 4GB R9 290 PCI-E VGA CARD for $529. But are the GTX 780 and R9 290 pretty much the same?

If your getting the R9 290 don't get the Asus version. It's a mixed bag.. on whether the cooler will work good. The took the 780's cooler and put it on the 290 without properly adapting it for the R9 290. I'd stick with Nvidia tho, better features, look better, run quieter and cooler.
