Hi!

This is my first thread around here, so please move my thread if it's in the wrong place :S

Anways, onto the topic. I'm starting to get into computer hardware, and I am heavily into gaming, so I thought recently that I'd upgrade my CPU.

I've had my eye on getting a 3770k and overclocking it, but I've been having problems choosing a new cooler, and whether it will be able to keep my processor cool enough to have a long life-span (mostly because I wanna run off this for a decent amount of time, when games become more intensive CPU-wise). I was aiming for an overclock of 4.5 GHz. And I'm also looking for a relatively cheap cooler, so I found some good reviews on the CoolerMaster Hyper 212  EVO, but I have no idea whether it will be powerful enough to work in my situation.

Ambient temperatures aren't too high in England, maxing out around 28/29 degrees C (really rarely), so that shouldn't make too much of a difference (I hope).

I'm looking forward to your advice! Thanks a ton in advance!

Firstly, welcome to the LTT community.

Secondly, You posted your topic in the correct part of the forum so don't worry.

Thirdly, if you are trying to future proof and you have not purchased any parts yet look towards the 4790k as good socket 1155 motherboards are hard to come by and the 4790k is the new BOSS so to speak.and pair it with a nice closed loop water loop and you will be golden.

I was thinking of getting something like that, however I already have a Gigabyte Z77X-D3H motherboard, which fits LGA1155. :P

Thanks for the responses guys! I'm not really looking for a water cooler, does anyone know an air cooler that can handle a 3770k at 4.5 GHz really well? I saw some suggestions for a Noctua fan, but I want to know what you guys think about it! (Sorry for all the questions, I just really don't want to make a mistake with this :P)

EDIT: MrBucket said that the Noctua NH-D14 would cut it and keep temps low enough, would that do?

The NH-D14 might/will depending on the overclocking quality of your CPU. Some Ivy bridge CPUs(the  really bad one that is) struggle to get 4.5ghz and higher with low temperatures and low voltage due to the TIM under the IHS.

Can't you sell the Z77x-D3h to someone?

Hmm, I may sell my Z77X-D3H, but I'm not sure whether I'd want to if I'm honest. I'd rather stick with my LGA 1155, as the mobo I have probably wouldn't sell for much as it's LGA 1155, and then buying a new mobo + a more expensive CPU + the cooler would be a lot, and I'm not on a terribly high budget.

What I am thinking of is the Noctua NH-U14S. I saw some temps for that + i7 3770k, and the processor was at 5 GHz, full load, with only a max of 92 C. While 92 is high, I'll rarely push my processor all the way to 100% load, AND I'm only overclocking to 4.5 (4.7 maximum) GHz. I've also liked some Noctua fans I've used in the past. I'll have to wait to get the money for it, as it's double the price of the 212 EVO, but I think it'll be worthy. Thoughts?
