Hi,

I'm planning on doing my first ever custom build in the next six months.

1. Budget & Location
I'm looking at spending up to $2000 AUD on my build, this is to cover everything except maybe keyboard, mouse and monitor/s, but it'd be great to get everything for under this price.

2. Aim
Once built the main uses for the PC will be general uni work, gaming, and a decent amount of CAD work.

I'd like to be able to play current games at fairly high settings, close to maximum, but I'm happy to be turning down the quality over time on future games as I don't want this PC to blow my budget.

3. Monitors
At first I will probably only be using one monitor but will consider getting a second in the future.

As stated before I'd like this to be considered in the budget but I will consider leaving the cost of the monitor out of the $2000 AUD

4. Peripherals
As with the monitor it would be great to have these fit within the budget but can be left out.

I'd like to get a mechanical keyboard as a few of my friends have one but I'm unsure on what kind of keys would suit me best. Any recommendations would help

5. Why are you upgrading?

I've decided to do this build because currently my main computer is a laptop, which is OK for web browsing and playing a few games, and the odd little bit of CAD. But I notice once I start pushing things it just won't handle it, as expected. The build is also about the experience of building my own PC as well and so that in the future I'll be able to make my parents a computer that isn't costing them extra because it's an off the shelf computer.

I wish to use the Cooler Master Storm Trooper for the case and will be installing Windows 8.1 (64 bit) for the OS, which is to be within the budget.

Any suggestions on parts, type of graphics card and anything to do with the build would be great.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply

Definitely i7 for the CPU,

I would say it's definitely worth getting Intel Core i7-4790K over Intel Core i7-4770K, since they're so close in price.

Would it be worth saving a bit of money by getting Intel Core i7-4790?  if I'm not planning on doing any OC?

Or would you recommend doing a small amount of OC to get a little more performance?

OC is always nice and there's no point getting devils if your not going to OC it however if you do plan on saving some money you can get a xeon

OK thanks I'll keep that in mind, I'll look around at slightly different options of each to save a little bit of money for a slightly bigger SSD.

I'd been looking on PCPartPicker but I think my problem in the past was looking at too high end parts (like $300 motherboards).

This will help a lot.

Thanks

i tend to try and stay away from the $300 boards like ROG in my opinion any mobo that's passed $200 aren't worth it (coming from a guy who's saving up for a z97 sabertooth mark 1 but that's just for aesthetics :P )

Yeah ROG was where I was looking, since reading your response and doing some research, I'll probably go with the storm trooper without the window and save some money by not bothering about aesthetics.
