I'm planning to upgrade my personal rig (motherboard, case) and also build a new computer for my dad.

I would get him a Pentium G3258 and overclock it, but I don't want to just throw away my Gryphon Z87.

My question is, would a G3258 work and overclock on the Z87 chipset? Do I need to update the BIOS or something like that?

Yeah it's through a bios update. I'd recommend you head over to your motherboard manufacturer's website to see if there's a bios update for it.
