Hi guys!

So im thinking of retiring my old quad Q8300...

What is better for gaming, AMD FX-6100, FX-4170, or Intel i3 3220?

Im using a gtx 660 oc by gigabyte.

Will it be a decent upgrade?

Thanks

better than a 3220 is an old 2600k or 2500k if u can find them go for a 2600k which should be quite cheap

or even better w8 till haswell comes out and again buy a 2600k which the stock 2600 behaves just like 3570; linus did a comparison between 2600 3570 and 3770 on bf3

the 6300 should work quite well with a 660. The 6300 will also be much better for multitasking small applications with games or running a virtual machine because of it's 6 cores.

But check out the FX-6350, at least in the US it is the same price as the 6300, but a bit more powerful. hope this helps.

Out of the three... the FX-6100.

And I think the 3220 would bottleneck the 660 a bit.

System: CPU: 4670k | Mobo: Gigabyte Z87MX D3H | RAM: 8gb 1600Mhz | Case:Corsair 350D | PSU: Corsair CX430, to be upgraded soon | GPU: HD4600, to be upgraded soon

The FX 6300 would be a very nice pair with a 660. Gaming improvement wise, unless your Q8300 was bottlenecking hard, you may see a couple slight jumps in frames in a game like CS:GO or FPS games of the like. If you play games like WoW, or GW2, you know CPU bound games, then you should see a much larger increase in performance! I hope my little rant here helped you out, also remember that the 6300 is unlocked so be sure to overclock it :).

Thanks MM. I play FPS for the most part, BF3, COD, Farcry 3, etc.. is this gonna be good?

Tks ;)

These are great games. Your GTX 660 should be able to run these games on medium-high settings.

My vote would go to the FX 6300, I would recommend grabbing an after market cooler for it & overclocking it.
This CPU overclocks very well on a modest CPU cooler like the Hyper 212.

The AM3+ socket is also still alive & will see a refresh of new processors by the end of the year, unlike the 1155 socket which is a dead socket.
In CoD the FX 6300 & the i3 perform very similarly, but the FX 6300 outperforms the i3 in BF3 & quite significantly so in Far Cry 3 due to the highly threaded nature of these two titles.

I already run everything on ultra at 1080p. I just want some increase in fps. Thanks :)

Nice benches. Ok i think we're done here. Going for the FX 6300 with aftermarket cooler.

Thanks everyone

P.S. Im thinking of doing some benchmarks now and later to compare the difference. Post it later ;)

By the way, is it me or are these cpu's a little underrated?

It's not just you, these CPUs are seriously underrated, in fact the FX 6300 has got to be my favorite CPU right now, great performance, excellent multi-threading, fantastic overclocking & incredibly in-expensive.

Yea they offer a great price to performance ratio and they are great for people who wants lots of performance for cheap.

I'm an intel fan and I see no reason to buy an i3 esp if your gaming. AMD is a much better choice

yep FX 6300 is good, i have one i fitted this year, and a Zalman LQ 315 liquid cooler works a treat.

you have to remember looking at the performance vs heat and wattage usage, the FX6300 is a good all-rounder with an after market cooler of course.

if you want intel go for intel, if you want AMD / AM3+ then the 6300 is a good deal

got to love Asus components

Hi guys!

So i got the cpu, 8gb of ram and the MB Asus M5A78L-M/USB3, and assembled the pc this afternoon. I have to say i had an increase of about 20fps in far cry 3 ;)

Are there any options in BIOS to make the cpu "faster"? I mean, by disabling the power saving features and/or any other option? (in intel is speedstep technology. In amd i dont know)

My mobo is Asus M5A78 USB3.

I know this board is not OC material, so i wanted to make the most out of the cpu. Also, i have an aftermarket cooler along with the cpu, a coolermaster one.

Thanks
