Personal Home Server

Go to solution Solved by Vitalius,

I bought two Xeon 6 core CPUs, a motherboard, & 32GB of ECC RAM off of Ebay for $235. You can probably get a decent hardware server for less than that (note that is ~£136). Note that this is a powerful server. A single Xeon with 16GB of ECC RAM would be more than enough, so you could probably get by with $150 or so (£87 or so).

Note that I had to bypass some really good deals because they were UK only (I didn't notice the .co.uk until I was about to buy it).

I suggest doing that and using FreeNAS. It's FreeBSD based, but many commands are similar to Linux (though not all obviously).

I have Plex running on my server as well as a MC server and both rock on like nobodies business (Plex streaming is great & MC FPS is between 45 & 120 with certain texture packs).

As long as you buy from trusted sellers with good reputations that have buyer's back guarantee, there's nothing to fear.

Hey Guys

For a While now I've been planning on building a small personal home server, and I needed it to match a couple of criteria

  • Cheap-If possible under £200
  • Low Power Consumption

I plan to use it for running a very small teamspeak server and a plex media server (neither will be used at the same time), I will be running a Linux Distro (could do with a sugestion)

Thanks to the (somewhat) recent release of AMD's Kabini Processors, I think I've come up with quite a cheap low power consumption server.

PCPartPicker part list: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/VPvpmG

CPU: AMD 3850 1.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£22.79 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: MSI AM1I Mini ITX AM1 Motherboard  (£21.17 @ Amazon UK)
Case: Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced (Black) Mini ITX Tower Case  (£34.33 @ CCL Computers)
Power Supply: EVGA 430W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply  (£29.99 @ Scan.co.uk)
Other: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Single Channel Kit  (£29.99)
Total: £138.27
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

  1. Do you have any suggestions?
  2. Do you think it will be fit for purpose?
  3. Do You think I could possibly run some NAS software at the same time as Teamspeak and/ore Plex?

If you want a cheap server, you can use my Compaq Pentium 3 system. I still use it as a server. 256 megs of RAM, but still pretty peppy. 20GB Hard drive, but has room for 1 more.

this is probably the only place i'll hang out anymore: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/274320-the-long-awaited-car-thread/

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D

That's epic. I assume the RAM is ECC. That would be perfect. Just swap out the 4 HDD's with whatever drives you need (if it supports SATA rather than IDE).

Yeah, the RAM is ECC, and drives are SATA,

Then yes, absolutely perfect. :D
