Hi there.

I am looking for opinions and suggestions for a new machine. My old machine has served me faithfully for nearly nine years and it has been starting to show the wear and tear. Skyrim killed the video card in it and now Mass Effect is grilling the rest as well as the spare video card I found. Aside from it being slow.

I am aiming for a gaming machine that can handle light video editing and recording. I plan to be playing Dragon Age 3 and Witcher 3 when those games are out. Then I have a few games sitting on my Steam store shelf waiting to be played, like Mirrors Edge and Tomb Raider, because I don't want to fry my old machine just yet.Though I'm on a good way of doing so. Moving on.

Now, even though I'm not all that concerned about spending on this machine of mine I would prefer the price not going above 2.200 USD. The current build is at 1.970 USD

3. Parts chosen so far

  • Case: H440 from NZXT
  • Power Supply: Corsair CX750M Modular 80PLUS
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K
  • Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth Z97
  • GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 760 DirectCU II 2GB GDDR5
  • RAM: 8GB Kingston HyperX Predator 2133MHz (2x4GB) CL11
  • SSD:120GB Samsung 840 EVO 540MBs/410MBs
  • HD: 1TB Seagate SATA3 7200rpm 64MB NCQ
  • CPU Fan: SCYTHE mugen 4 Rev.B

Regarding OS. I own Win 7 Home Prem 64 bit. Should I get a copy of Win 8.1 or should I just let my own copy of Win 7 be enough?

Other than that thanks in advance for reading this and hopefully I'll end up with a good machine before Dragon Age 3 comes out.

You're in Iceland, do you have a specific site or something that you'll be buying parts from? I have some immediate thoughts on your build already but I'd like to see the prices you're dealing with first.

Nice choice on case! :D

That build looks pretty solid, however, I would up the GTX 760 to the GTX 770 if you can afford it as there is a decent performance difference. ;)

The site I have been looking at is http://www.start.is

They are currently the only ones that are selling the H440.

Erm...that link seems to redirect to this exact page...weird.

Maybe take the MSI Twin Frozr version of the 760. It is super quiet. Not that the Asus one is very loud, but MSI is quieterererer

That link just takes me back to this post. Well I suppose that doesn't mean I can't say my general thoughts. With the Z97 board you should really aim for the i7 4790k (if the price difference isn't much) as you can get much higher stable overlocks at lower voltages, this really only applies if you plan on running your CPU max all the time, but considering you'll only be doing light editing and recording even a locked 4770 would do you fine. There are also plenty of cheaper motherboards that offer the same feature set as the Sabertooth. Of course I've always been a person who built with aesthetics in mind and if you really dig the looks of the Sabertooth than there's nothing I can do for you there. Of course you can always do various looks with every motherboard. In other words if you're planning to do something with it or just love the looks too much you can really cut costs to the motherboard.

I'm not certain on the pricing yet in Iceland but you might be able to get a much better PSU for a little more or even less. I also don't think that 750 watts is all that necessary unless of course you have certain overclocks and upgrades in mind. You might be able to cut cost and still achieve similar performance on your SSD deepening on what's available there. Lastly and most importantly you can definitely use a more powerful GPU. With certain cuts to certain areas and maximum spending you can get a 780, but if you want something with better value a GTX 770 or r9 280x or r9 290 might be better. I believe the r9 290 is of better value but if you like certain features in Nvidia and don't like the thermals and wattage consumption of the AMD cards well I guess Nvidia it is.

You gotta do you girl. I always say you gotta do you. And if he's doing him, then who's doing you? Because right now, it seems like no one's doing you.

Oh I love that, however ... The kicker is that when that machine arrives to the country I will have to pay customs fees, some handling and possibly some extra taxes as well. So that 2165 dollar machine is more like 2720 when it finally arrives to me. Which sucks but that is just how it is.

I would love to have two 780 in my machine but seeing that a single one is about 771USD here in Iceland that is just too much.

Okay so there aren't that many options available from the site you gave me and pricing in Iceland is kinda terrible in comparison to the U.S. (no offense), and it does make sense as to why. Below is an explanation to why I choose what I choose and below that are the parts with pricing directly from the site. Doing a little Googling I've found that the price is about at the budget when I convert the costs to USD. I hope you like the build as it was a bit difficult with the broken translation and really limited and odd options.

It seems the 4790k or Devil's Canyon isn't out yet in your region. If you wan to wait for that you can get better overclocks than the 4770k other than the part for part it's pretty much the same. It seems y'all only got Asus as your graphics card over there which isn't bad but I'd liked to have had more options and god your graphics card are so dang expensive. I picked the motherboard that I did seeing that the Sabertooth boards aren't all that necessary and I personally find the aesthetics lacking as I personally am not into the military look. However if you really prefer that then I guess that'll be it. I found some cheaper RAM, with the RAM you choose the performance difference isn't going to be apparent for your specific purposes. With some extra budget I figured you might want a better SSD so you can store all of your programs and games on the one drive. As for the power supply I honestly couldn't find one any more suitable to your specifications based on the site you game.

P.S.

Huh, I could've sworn I picked different RAM.

Thank you very much for that. And no offence taken, I do realize that the prizes for computer parts here are just insane. My partner nearly had a heart attack when hearing how much it would cost me without a new monitor, keyboard and mouse.

You are right the 4790k isn't available just yet, I found one company that is selling it but I don't trust them due to their bad reputation.

And, yes you are correct I am very limited when it comes to selection of things. There are more companies that are selling computer parts here but still the selection is crappy. My selection is generally between Gigabyte, Asus and MSI, occasional EVGA but in some cases they are expensive as f**k. It was only recently that I found a company that was selling cases from NZXT, which I'm so happy about because I do want colour from my case. I'm trying to aim for a build that is black and red so the Sabertooth board isn't a must.

One of the reasons I only provided that single link is because that it is generally better to buy everything from one seller. The reason is that you generally get an insurance for two years on the machine.

I do like that build that you made and very appreciate it. Especially considering broken translations and limited selection :)

here is another reference build for the nice lady

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£198.13 @ Scan.co.uk)
Motherboard: MSI H87-G43 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (£69.17 @ CCL Computers)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  (£75.35 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£59.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (£38.70 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 290 4GB PCS+ Video Card  (£279.59 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Case: NZXT H440 (Blue/Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  (£91.73 @ Scan.co.uk)
Power Supply: SeaSonic 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  (£90.78 @ Scan.co.uk)
Total: £903.44
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I think this build may make sense because the Xeon is basically a i7 but without the intel graphics

the CPU will run cooler but clock speed will be locked but you still can use it for gaming and for video editing purpose

but I am not sure how much will it cost you based on your own currency

google states it around 174944.94 Icelandic Króna excluding shipping charges

The Xeon CPU can only be found in pre-made machines here and are usually freakishly expensive. I have no logical idea why computer parts are so expensive here in Iceland. They just are.

what will be the cost of shipping the parts from let say UK?

I do know Europe countries do have to pay VAT

The shipping will most probably depend on weight and then when it gets to the country there is VAT put on the whole thing, or individual parts even, depending on the mood of the toll people. However, the guys that sell the case I want are willing to check if they can special order parts so I'm going to send them a list of what I want and see what they can do.
