Hi guys,

I am building a pc for next gen gaming and oculus rift DK 2. I have put together 3 builds and need advice.

First build is intel with overclocking http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Pim01/saved/yjYLrH

Second & third are AMD builds with a different CPU etc.

I really don't know what to go for, I will spend the extra if it's really worth doing so as I want VR to be a major part of my gaming from August onwards. It's basically coming down to CPU as I have bought the r9 290 tri-x OC already. P.s I have a hardrive already so no need to buy one. Thanks guys could do with a hand. ( May order today) :-)

the i5 build will be the best combo with your 290

Make sure you don't get that SSD, it's possibly the worst one you can buy.

I would go with the first build.

CPU: I am a little bit of a fan of Intel K series CPUs. If not Intel, then at least the 8350.

GPU: Good choice! ;-) I have the same GPU. Fairly quiet (actually as quiet as my previous 280) but very powerful.

RAM: Good choice as well, I would only look for pricing on faster RAM. Sometimes it almost makes no difference whether you buy 1600 or 2400 Mhz RAM. 8gigs is enough though.

Mobo: MSI Z97  Used to have an MSI board and they seem reliable. But that is just my experience.

SSD: The Kingston SSD is probably fine. What I don't like is the size. I have only my OS, BF4, Splinter Cell and Star Citizen on my SSD (250GB) and only have 88GB left. So 120 is pretty small for an OS and a few games.

Case: Can't say much about it.....just that I heard airflow is not optimal in there. Just make sure you don't buy things that you will replace in 6 months anyways.
PSU: Soid choice, 750 watts is plenty for this, unless you want to crossfire in the future, you will be fine.

Hope I could help.

I'd go for the i5 build like @dragoon20005 said, but get a better motherboard. It's worth it if you aren't on a tight budget. I suggest an asus z79-a.

that mobo is good

MSI build solid boards

only thing is the SSD

swap to Samsung Evo SSD and you are good

if you can add a 1TB HDD should be good

It's true, but the z97-a has better support for multi-gpu solutions, so if he wanted to add a second 290 later he would have preferred to have the asus one. The components are a bit better too. But maybe it isn't really important to him after all.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Thanks guys for quick response. Could you explained why the ssd is poor etc. I really can't go any higher with price so got to keep to the £800 budget. Mapegl could you let me know what sort of FPS I can get on say BF4 on high/ultra. Oculus rift is going to be 75fps locked so ultra might be out but high should be in ?

Thanks in advance.

So just so you know what these numbers mean. When I test for performance in BF4, I always go to paracel storm and fly directly through the smoke at point E, just above the destroyed aircraft carrier.

This is the worst spot I could find in this game for FPS. I am just going to give you the minimum and what I felt like was something like an average, because FRAPS doesn't work with Mantle and DirectX has worse performance.

Ultra: min:50 FPS

         avg:70-75 FPS

High: min 85 FPS

         avg: 95-100 FPS
