As is turns out, I seem to be fairly ignorant when it comes to telling the subtle differences in server boards.  <_<

I'm looking for a server mobo that would support a Pentium G3220 (LGA 1150) with ECC RAM compatibility. 6 SATA ports is a minimum and the form factor isn't a major issue, but I do have a preference towards mini-ITX. The budget would be <$225.

One other question: so long as the board is listed as LGA 1150, will all processors which fit that socket function, despite not being listed under CPU compatibility?

Thanks!

CPU: i5 4670k • Cooler: Corsair H100i • Motherboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER • RAM: Crucial Ballistix Elite 2x 8GB • Storage: Samsung 840 250GB SSD, 2x WD Red 3TB • GPU: EVGA GTX 780 3GB • PSU: Corsair RM750W • Case: Corsair 750D • Mouse: Razer Naga 2012 (I actually use the thing for productivity/media buttons) • Keyboard: Ducky Shine 3 w/ Browns - Green LED • Monitor: Asus PB278Q 27" 2560 x 1440, ASUS PB238Q 23" 1920x1080 • Lighting: 2m NZXT Sleeved Blue LED Strip • pcpartpicker.com/p/3cHfZ

there no LGA1150 boards which supports ECC RAM

the only board which I can think off my head that uses ECC RAM is those which supports Xeon CPUs

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Why a server motherboard?

It's for a FreeNAS build that I'm helping to plan.

Well that I know to be false actually: Newegg search. There are definitely 1150 boards which are fine with ECC.

I stand corrected

but they will be more costly

then again SuperMicro has this board

8 core Atom with 16 SATA ports!!!

That's absolutely crazy haha. Unfortunately, this config involves a plex media server as well, which needs a bit more horsepower than an atom can provide. The Pentium is something he just had which happened to fit.

I not really sure

but will more cores be better for Plex Media server?

the Pentium has only 2 core and 2 treads

the Atom has 8 core and 8 treads

the only lacking part is no onboard graphics and no L3 cache for the Atom

but the low wattage to power it is really great as a NAS/Media server

From what I've read, it seems fairly unpredictable if all the cores will be utilized for transcoding. I'll do some more looking and see if anyone has had good luck with plex on an Atom.
