Ram with different speed

Go to solution Solved by airdeano,

@Megazero

from the CPU, first slot should be kingston 1600, next slot kingston 1333, next slot

blank, and last slot kingston 1333. most (if not all) default dual channel is DIMM

slot 2 & 4 (provided they are matched modules)

from the MSI manual:

So... because the first 2 4G RAM stick I have I bought it one after another when I still dont know anything about building computer, the speed of those 2 are 1600 and 1333MHz respectively, and right now I have just been given another free 4G 1333MHz one, so I want to ask this: do different Ram speed in one single build have any harm?

This is my current setup

I believe the 1600mhz RAM will be lowered to 133mhz. You can try to overclock the 1333mhz sticks to 1600mhz, which you probably can do easily, then run the first DIMM at it's rated speed.

I'm just worried about compatibility.

well it is best to get matched speeds and capacity RAM modules to prevent stability

issues and data errors.

plus you'd want the matched RAM in DIMM slots 0 and 2 or 1 and 3. this will allow the

onboard memory controller to pair the DIMMS in dual channel and allow the workflow

throughput without errors. as it is now, you are working in single channel mode on all

three slots (different parameters) and make the system slow and unstable under harsh

demands or loads.

I dont know how to OC nor how to check it... xD Anyway, I go to my bios and see an option name DRAM Frequency, so I change it to 1600MHz, is that correct? And even though I have 3 Ram it's still count as dual channel right? and so when I check by CPU-Z it said my DRAM Frequency is 800 and Channel # is dual so I do have 1600MHz across all 3 of them now right?

@airdeano so where should I put the RAM and in what order :D? As of now The order I put it is 1600MHz - Blank - 1333MHz - 1333MHz, so I should change it to 1333MHz - Blank - 1333MHz - 1600MHz?

Your ram will operate at the slowest  ram stick, not just in mhz. There are timings that come with ram and they say how fast or slow your ram can operate. It's never good to mix match ram. Not only will it operate slower, but will also lose the ability to run in dual channel mode.

I know that I shouldnt mixed it, but then the first 2 I buy it separately when I still dont know anything about computer building, and the 3rd I got for free so... there's no changing that :P next time I upgrade to 16GB or whatever I'm going to buy a whole new 2x8 ~

I see, I usually put the 2 RAM in 1 and 3 instead of 2-4, so because I got the first and 2nd Ram separately so... xD I will do it, thanks.

@Megazero

since the P67 days, it usually has been 2&4 for primary dual channel (some it didn't

matter) and some coming for X58 systems and 3 DIMM modules that was the "right

way" to install three-channel modules. plus it helps on large air coolers and fan

interference issues having the DIMM slots further outward.
