Hello,

Last two days, I was trying to overclock my GPU, gainward GTX 770 Phantom DG 2GB, and I am frustrated because I have no idea what went wrong. I used EVGA Precision X to boost GPU clock to 1225 Mz and Memory clock to 1990 MHz, which were the numbers that I found on two reviews. The overclock stability was tested on EVGA OC Scanner X for 30 mins and I couldn't find any crack or something abnormal. The temperature was 68 to 70 celcius. One weird things was that I couldn't modify the voltage. However, as soon as I turn games on, the system shut down which I believe it is a sign that the overclock didn't work properly. I tested two games COD ghost warriors and Battle field 4 and both of them have the same problem.

My build

CPU : i5 - 4670

MB : Asrock H87 Performance

RAM : Samsung DDR3 4GB PC3-12800

SSD : Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB

PSU :  Coolermaster V1000 W

It is my first overclocking so I don't know any about it but I can't help but thinking that the problem is something to do with mainboard. Does mainboard have any correlation with GPU overclocking or is there any problem with my build?

ps. The driver version is 337.88 and I use Windows 8 64 bit

Thank you for your help ^^

GPU overclocking is not inhibited by the motherboard/ chipset/ CPU. You can do it with any combination. Although "gaming" and "overclocking" oriented boards have features such as better power delivery and PCIe lanes connected directly to CPU which helps in extracting the absolute maximum potential of GPU via overclocking.

linus has cover this before

nope not really a huge difference when using gaming based board

*coughs* Asus *cough*

Same with CPUs, each GPU's overclocking results will be unique to that card.  Don't start with very high settings, start low and work up.

My GPU is similar, it can OC well and is stable in Unigine Heaven, but as soon as I play a game, it is unstable.  I just have to use a lower OC.
