Well xbox drives are formatted with FAT32. But from what Wats has said it sounds like they come with some disk encryption, a guide is found here http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-connect-your-xbox-360-hard-drive-to-your-pc/

Thanks for the guide, i'll have a look when i get home :)

It also won't format when installed in an Xbox, so i'm thinking it's a bad drive.

Hopefully that's not the case as it's my friend's and we opened it up straight after he bought it without testing it :(
