I just bought one less than a week ago and it has not failed me so far. (Although my internet has) I would just recommend as soon as you get the device in your hands and have a internet connection to go to your apps via google play store and disable all auto update for google apps that is the one problem I had, that google app shit was filling my shield (it has just over 12 gigs of internal storage) some programs were like 60mb on it's own as just an update

This is my old pc which I am reamending to be a media server or a nas. Motherboard: Generic fujitsu CPU: Intel pentium G640 @2.8 GHz RAM: 4GB generic fujitsu memory PSU:  CPUCooler: Stock intel cpu cooler Storage:  Fujitsu MHZ2120BH @120GB, Soon to have a HDD for more storage.

The shield is neither a "must buy" nor a rip-off. It falls squarely in the realm of personal preference. Like others have stated, you can use a laptop with steam to stream games, and a phone to play android games on. But only if that's what you want. Personally, I will only game on a laptop if I can attach a real mouse and keyboard or a 360 controller to it; and I'm about as likely to play games on a touchscreen as I am to gargle hypodermic needles that I fond in an alley. Obviously the laptop and phone solution wouldn't work for me, but that's just my personal preference. Just be honest with yourself about what YOU want, and how well each solution would fit your needs.
