It depends, often the CPU manufacturer won't update their QVL for a product after launch. I read that there isn't any real world noticeable difference in speed above 1600 anyhow.

This mostly apply for Intel system

certain mobo like the gaming series aka ROG or MSI gaming have support for RAM speeds above 1600MHz

RAM speeds above 1600MHz are considered to be OC speeds which is why they will indicate 2400MHz (OC)

for your RAM to run at the rated speed, you should consult your mobo manual or look under the supported RAM list given by the mobo manufacturer

setting the RAM speed can be as simple as applying the XMP profiles on the RAM from the BIOS settings, other will have to manually set the speed and CAS

When I was looking for memory I noticed that the CPU I chose for the build only supported DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1600, but say I want to get DDR3-2400, would that work?

yes it will work, chances are you'd have trouble pushing the RAM all the way up to 2400MHZ but it will certainly run stable at 1866MHZ for example...1600MHZ is a given.

Most of the time faster RAM won't cost much more and are better quality, but if you wan't to save some bucks you should look at 1866MHZ or 1600MHZ RAM, pick good quality reliable brands (Corsair or Kingston for example)

Is G.Skill any good?

it is a good brand

refer to the mobo manufacturer and see if the memory you are buying is one of the supported ones

As a standard looking for memory (not looking into any kind of color scheme), you will be looking at the capacity, frequency and latency.

So, look for the cheapest 2x4Gb (8Gb) 1600/1866MHz with a CAS latency on 9 (CL9).

Games normally rely more on a lower latency than a higher frequency, and it have shown that their are minor improvement going from 1600MHz to 2400MHz in most games.

G.skills normally can be rather expensive.

The failure rate on RAM is about even throughout all manufactures.

wow! i totaly agree with all of this man this is going into nano's copy/paste_made-up_perfect_answers.txt straight up! LOL :P

...but the reason i suggested Kingston and Corsair dimms is because ALL the kits i've had the chance to try from these brands holded the XMP profile at whe specified voltage every time and none ever failed.

For gaming there's no improvements with faster RAM but it's always good to know that you have great dimms that run's to specifications XMP and above.
