running trip x16 would run in this lane config:

single card: Gen3 x16

dual card: Gen3 x8x8

trip card: Gen3 x8x4x4

As others said, 2 290s would be much better and might actually perform better while still costing less. If you have cards in crossfire it makes no difference in which card you plug each monitor.

You can but they won't be treated as a single large screen (Eyefinity) .. 

 

For Eyefinity, all connections should go to the primary card .. and I don't think there is a card out there with 3 HDMI ports ..
