Hey guys!

So I built my computer in January as a PC running on Windows 8. All's going really well.

I'm a big music guy and I love the programs that Apple support and offer, as i've learnt from my old, beaten up MacBook Pro...

Recently, though i've been thinking about installing Max OSX to a seperate new HD or SSD in my system in order to have 2 PC's in one in essence.

Now, I was just wondering if it would be viable to buy another hard drive and install OSX onto it, so that if one day I decide i'd like to use my music programs, I can, and then another day i'll move back to windows for my gaming and general needs. The way I would do it would be to completely have 2 seperate HDs and if I want to switch OSs, i would go into BIOS and boot off the different drive. How practical is this?

Thanks!

Running OSX on a PC is called 'Hackintosh' and only certain hardware is compatible.

However the concept of having multiple operating systems on one machine is common, it's just called 'dual booting', people commonly will dual boot Linux and Windows.

If I use 2 seperate HDDs though, i probably wont be able to dualboot because OSX and Win8 are on different drives, amirite?

No, separate drives is standard procedure for dual booting.

It is of course possible to partition one drive and have an OS on each, but a drive each is an ideal scenario.

When you want to select the drive to boot from it is a 10 second procedure in your BIOS.

Yeah, i've seen some tutorials where theres this kind on 'menu' every time you switch your pc on... i dont want that, i just want to manually select drives in my bios so i have full control over my drives and can unplug one if i want. I think i got this! Ill just make a bootable USB drive, install it to my second, empty hard drive, then go through the installation. Should work in theory right?

Yes, but OSX is not plug and play, more work is needed to run it on a pc unlike windows or Linux.

Do you know what work would be needed or are you not sure?
