Need assistance choosing a GPU and PSU

Go to solution Solved by Nxl8,

I would get the MSI GTX 750Ti as it is newer and has higher clock speeds. But if you want to push your budge to $200 you could get this EVGA card http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp43759kb

As for PSU I would recommend 500/550w such as the http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-ssp550rt SeaSonic are perhaps the most reputable PSU brand on the market, you could make do with something a bit cheaper but on for another brand that is slightly less reputable, it will not really affect you if you do not choose a SeaSonic http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1550sxxb9 something like this XFX would be plenty enough but just a little cheaper (based on USD).

If you could tell us your current PSU we might be able to say if it is enough for the card or not, the MSI only draws about 60w and EVGA only about 60w as well.

Hi guys,

Im new to GPUs so i dont know anything about it.

I have an Intel core i7 processor @ 3.4 GHz,octa core sth, 8 GB RAM, 2GB Intel HD on board graphics

[i asked for 2 gb graphics and the guy at the computer store gave me this ! i know i know :( . But its not very bad, its about average. runs most games/software but slightly slower]

so im planning to buy a GPU about 200$ (Im open to suggestions)

so far i found these to be good

MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti 2 GB GDDR5 Graphics Card (http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N750Ti_TF_2GD5OC.html#hero-overview)

or

Gainward NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti 2 GB GDDR5 Graphics Card

Now, i came to understand that GPUs need a PSU. The MSI says it needs 600mw, and Gainward needs 400 mw.

So, should i find a PSU that has an output of exactly what the GPU needs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

And PS:
What should i do with the on board graphics after getting the dedicated GPU?

I dont think i have a PSU now. Its plugged in directly to my CPU. IDK if theres a psu box inside it    :D

i was thinking i HAVE to buy a PSU as well. I was thinking about coolermaster or corsair. and now seasonic.

Also what you mean with this?:

PS: i7's aren't 8 cores...

I dont think there is even "challenge"  between 750ti 2 gb and R9 270 ...I mean,750 ti is a lot faster imo.

and

i meant, after getting the dedicated GPU, what happens to the onboard graphics? should i disable them or combine them with the GPU ( IF thats possible in the first place)?

aaand

i7s arent 8 cores??

you put the GPU (and plug respective power cables if needed), and you plug your screen in GPUs ports... not in MB.

iGPU should autodisable, in this case the integrated GPU is IN the CPU

I7s are 4 cores, 8 threads

ah, i didnt know that.

thanks very much :)

I hope you aren't serious...

I am serious...Maybe in some benchmarks r9 does better, but when it comes to gaming its totally different where core clock counts a lot more than memory clock...Also,big + for nvidia are the "gaming" drivers, which improve really performance...I have hd 7750 1 gb,and since 13.12 drivers i have only problems, crashing, fps drop and recognition of card by system...
