Future proof CPU

Go to solution Solved by SpyRosL,

Haha yes I have to hurry. It is going to be a hard decision. I wish I could own them both for a week each and see which is more suitable for me. Too bad stores don't let you do that.

Well, right now you won't see more performance in games that justifies the extra $250 and minimum of $200 2011 socket motheboard for the 4930k. Even an i5 is awesome for gaming. But things in the future are about to change(presumably) so it's entirely up to you.

I'm looking to upgrade my old computer. It will be used to gaming, video encoding and compiling code. Games are the most important to me though. I'd want the most performance. I have narrowed it down to a 4790k or 4930k. They are quite different when it comes to price but you are not buying a CPU every month. I am looking to keep this for at least the next 3-5 years. (the one I have now i getting to be 3 years soon. It's still great but I just want more performance in gaming. AMD isn't so great) Which out of the 2 is a better option for the future?

Obviously the 4930k if you want the most performance and can afford it.

Future proof doesn't exist.

Get a 4690K on a Z97 board with a decent aftermarket cooler.

That's why I said I need it to be decently good for the next 3-5 years. I'm pretty I can do that since I've been running my 8120 for quite a while now and it's still doing great.

Yeah I was thinking of the 4930k but is it better in gaming than the 4790k? It's clocked lower and some of the older games do use single core. What do you guys think? Money isn't really a problem but at the same time, I don't want to waste it if I'm not getting any better performance.

Yes it does.

On topic:

4930k is the most price/preformence futureproof CPU you can get. But if budget not so big I would aim at a i7 4790k Its very good OCer from Intel.

[spoiler= Dream machine (There is also a buildlog)]

Wait for the 5930K.

5930K cause that socket should last 2 generations so if a major advancement comes about you can upgrade (probably need to update mobo firmware, basically what happened with SB-E to IB-E on X79)
It would easily last 5 years. Which is an eternity in the tech world.

CORSAIR RIPPER: AMD 3970X - 3080TI & 2080TI - 64GB Ram - 2.5TB NVME SSD's - 35" G-Sync 120hz 1440P
MFB (Mining/Folding/Boinc): AMD 1600 - 3080 & 1080Ti - 16GB Ram - 240GB SSD
Dell OPTIPLEX:  Intel i5 6500 - 8GB Ram - 256GB SSD

I wonder what would Linus say lol. Not sure if it's really worth waiting for the 5930k. It will be expensive at launch and I'd still have to wait a few more months to get it.

You want futureproof? You need to get the newest stuff in the market.

You say money is not a big problem so you should wait for the 5930k. 4930k costs right now almost $500 so the 5930k will cost around the same give or take. For gaming,it will last minimum 5 years for ultra gaming with that beast and also will be suppoting the new DDR4 memory ;)

I can't wait that long. My girlfriend is pregnant and once she comes back from her vacation at the end of august, she will somehow guilt trip me and get me to save the money to buy baby things. That's why I need to do the upgrade now.

@Paralectic

Technically you are wrong and right at the same time. Depending on the period (3-5 years) you can build a computer that will last you that long. Look at how long technology has evolved in the past 3 years. We've had DDR3 since November 2008 which were introduced with the first series of i7s. Software hasn't changed so much either. It's been the same Adobe Premiere Pro for the past 10 years lol. Sure gaming comes out with a new graphic thing here and then but that's easily fixed with a video card swap. So all in all, even my 8120 can handle all my needs just right. I just need something to spend my money on.

I think I will wait 2 more weeks until more reviews and overclocks release about the 4790k. If they are good and the gaming performance is good compared to the 4930k, I'll just buy that. Thank you for the suggestions.
