My friend's laptop gets into an infinite boot cycle, bluescreen, repair, and then black screen with no hdd activity. After trying to boot to Ubuntu off of a flash drive, it finally told that there's a file missing from the boot order.

You're probably like, "file missing from boot? just run the start up repair from the disk!" Here's the thing, the repair finds nothing wrong. Trying to repair, disk or not, yields no results.

What do?

Can you do a full system recovery from the start up disk?

The most common result of insufficient wattage is a paperweight that looks like a PC

You can try this, let me know if you don't come right.

are you able to boot to safe mode?

if that fails

the only way is to take the HDD out of the laptop and mount into a external drive cage to extract the data in the HDD before performing a full format and reload of windows

I used this:

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/win7-windows-7-mbr,10036.html

Start at step 4 with a repair disc and just type all the commands like it shows. It worked for me so hopefully it will help you.

what is the brand of the laptop?

if its a HP use F11

the rest use just F8

and then advance options

if all the above fail

just do a backup of the data as an external drive like the picture below

computer store will have these enclosure

logitec-LHR-PBGU2-2.5-inch-SATA-drive-en

Your drive MBR may be messed up. Happened to me when I had dual booted Ubuntu and then deleted it.

Formatting the drive and starting over will be the most thorough option. If you can get into Ubuntu than try and transfer any data off the drive you want first.

I have no clue what he did to do this, but he's not really the kind of guy that knew that 2 OSes could be in the same drive until I showed him. We don't really have a spare copy of windows to use, (it's a laptop) so a "fresh install" can't really be done.

I put installed Ubuntu onto a flashdrive and he seems to love Ubuntu, he just hates the incompatibility with the programs he likes.

He did let me have the computer for the night, so I have all night to tinker and try different things.

You can download legitimate copies of Windows from technet.

All you need once they are installed is a valid product key.

We have win 7& 8, just no product keys, that's the real problem.

I think that if you are able to prove you own a legit copy of Windows, MS will give you a new copy.
