550ti for Physx

Go to solution Solved by Guest Kloaked,

@Jacobsheeler  Glad it worked. Have fun :)

I have a GTX 780 overclocked to 1220Mhz while gaming. I can max out Crysis3 at 1080p with 45FPS or so and in metro: last light ( no matter what settings it's on) gets less than 10. It only works if i take advanced Physx off. With that off i get 50fps maxed at 1080p. It seems i'm not the only one who has had this problem. I did the standard driver testing and i even uninstalled and re-installed the game. So, can i put my old 550ti in and use that for Physx? I also have a 4770k would it be worth using that for Physx?

Physx driver? It is separate from the GPU driver? And even at low settings it is below 15.

Yes. I had the same issue with Metro (I'm running 2 GTX 770 4GB in SLI), I looked up the issue and I found out my PhysX driver was out of date. For some reason it didn't install or download with my GeForce drivers.

You can get it here.

Great. I will get back to you with the results.

i used a 660ti as a physx card for my titan, and it actually hurt performance. it wasn't much, maybe like 5% but it was the same architecture.

from experience,  don't use a dedicated physx card

The Physx in Metro is optimized like crap, and that's what is causing your problem. Physx is great, but if not executed correctly it creates all sorts of problems. Arkham City had a sequence against the Joker where Physx just broke everything until they released a patch to fix it. There is no reason to use a dedicated Physx card as it won't fix what is really an issue with the game. Either your card can handle your graphics settings plus Physx, or it can't. If it can't, you either disable Physx or lower your graphics settings to an appropriate level.

Like I mentioned before in the thread, it's more than likely a PhysX driver issue.

I read what you said, and what you said is not accurate. Physx drivers are attached to graphics drivers, if your graphics driver is up to date, your Physx driver is up to date. The issue with Metro has been around since the game was released and has never been fixed, either through a game patch or a driver patch.

Well explain why my PhysX driver was out of date, even though I had up-to-date GeForce drivers - then how updating my PhysX drivers fixed my low FPS issue with PhysX enabled while playing Metro: Last Light.

You don't know how to apply your updates correctly. Go download and run any driver update from Nvidia. Select "Custom Install" to see the list of all the different things included. Every single one includes "#D Vision Controller", "3D Vision Driver", "HD Audio", "NVIDIA GeForce Experience" and "Physx System Software". Every single one of those is included in every single driver update and every single one is pre-checked. So, if your Physx wasn't to date, it means you didn't have the most up to date driver or you were unchecking the other options and just installing the driver on it's own.

As far as Metro working for you, that's nice, it does work for some people. But many and more have issues and it's always the same issues. But the fact remains that the OP's problem won't be fixed with a dedicated Physx card, which is the subject of this thread. I never told the OP not to check for an update, but you took it upon yourself to try and act as if I wasn't giving valid advice. But, my advice was actually valid, unlike yours. If anyone's Physx driver is not up to date it's because they either didn't update their driver or they did something wrong, like you did.

I do that every time I download my GeForce drivers because I have to re-enable SLI after it finishes installing, but for some reason my PhysX driver was out of date. I know how to install drivers properly, lol.

It wasn't on my part - it more than likely just didn't install even though I had it checked. After updating those drivers, it was fixed and I'm willing to bet that would fix the issue people are having with PhysX bringing down their FPS so much. I don't see how some people are having the same exact issue that I did, I go and update PhysX and viola, it works.

So, don't take my response like I'm trying to belittle your advice. I'm just saying I'm fairly certain that updating PhysX drivers would fix it, because there's no way it would work for some and not others.

And thanks for schooling my ass.

You know exactly what I'm talking about.

But, again, if drivers are up to date, it means that Physx is up to date. Your solution won't fix the issue for someone else, unless that person also doesn't know what they are doing and they are unchecking Physx from the driver update. If a person applies the update correctly, it's impossible for Physx to not be up to date.

I found this, which is what happened to me and other people too, which is why I said even though I clearly had PhysX checked under custom installation, it did not come with the more up to date drivers.

It should link directly to the 'Best Solution', which is what I'm referring to.

EDIT: Just going to add the relevant part of the post here.

Fortunately someone has pointed out that the PhyX driver with the video driver is out-dated. I installed the latest PhyX driver and now it works perfectly with frame rate > 60 fps.

Go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.13.0725-driver.htm...

and download the latest PhyX driver. It is not part of the video driver package for some reason. If it still doesn't work, turn off the Advanced PhyX option in Metro.

This has fixed it. The Physx driver fixed the FPS problems. I have had the latest Geforce driver since before i got the game and i guess it just didn't download properly. Thanks for the help man, I appreciate it.

I have a 780 and it did not matter how low i turned the settings the game would stay below 15fps. I think it was just a weird anomaly that the driver update fixed. I now get aroud 45 FPS with everything maxed including SSAA at X4.

I installed everything properly, I am not a newcomer to this. Glitches in the system happen from time to time.
