So I've been using a pair of Audio Technica ATH-50's with a Zalman clip-on mic for gaming, music and pretty much everything else and now I'm wondering if I should get an additional headset purely for gaming. I would be prepared to spend about 100 Euros and not much more (from Germany). The headset that I've been looking at is the Kingston HyperX Cloud and the reviews that I've seen are really positive (Hardware Canucks and Tek Seyndicate). How would it compare to my ATH-M50's? Other recommendations are welcome. I play all sorts of games from Battlefield and CS to Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs.

Thanks

I don't know if that would necessarily be an upgrade from M50s. You might be better off saving up a bit more or maybe going for an open headphone.

So they perform similarly when gaming? If so, then I'll wait until I can afford something better.

They should be quite similar yes. Maybe a slightly wider sound stage since the M50 is notoriously small but you would be better off saving up.

Sell the M50, combine the money, and get a good open-backed headphones. In the amazon USA, the HE400, which is very good for the price, is $299. I don't know how much it cost in your country. If you think you can save to get the HE400, I'd really recommend it. May need a separate amp, though, but just a small Fiio E6 will suffice...

I don't think he would get anywhere near what he needs for HE400.

Well, he listed he'll be using it for musics, which the HE400 is quite superb. For gaming, I just realized, that big surface of the planar drivers are very good for positional sounds. I've been wondering for sometime, why I can hear the directions better with my HE400 compared to my AD700 which have wider soundstage.

The downside is of course the incredible weight. Half a kg sitting on my head....

Yeah the weight is somewhat of an issue. I've been getting neck pain from using my T50RP for too long and that's not good lol. The comfort is superb with Mayflower's custom pads but the weight kills my neck sometimes.

The AD700 is 280g, I've looked up the T50RP, it's 330g. The HE400 is 440g. I literally can't feel the weight of the AD700, if I put them on right after taking off the HE400....

The HE400 costs 299 Euro here so that's out of my price range even if I sell my M50s and an Amp would run me another 100 or so. I suppose I could spend up to 200 Euro if I sell the M50s. Any good headphones in that price range?

I remember looking at this website where a guy reviewed tons of headphones and gave them ratings in categories like gaming and music and it seems fairly well known. Do you guys know what it's called?

Well open headphones are generally better for gaming because of better directional accuracy. Since you're in Germany, look into Beyerdynamic DT770 and DT990. The DT770 is closed and the DT990 is open. Since they are German brands, it might be cheaper than other ones. Alternatively, you can also look at AKG K612 for open.

Edit: Also if you want to try your hand at modding, you can buy Fostex T50RP and mod them yourself.

I think there is extra weight in the headband of the HE400. The T50RP has a pretty slim band. It's just a small band of metal inside a little bit of rubber and that's it.

The DT990 is 133 Euro. Is that cheaper than in the US? They are 250 Ohm, so doesn't that mean that I need an Amp?

It's $150 here so it's pretty close. You might need an amp depending on what motherboard you're using. Look for the 80 ohm version and see how much that costs.

Can't find a 80 Ohm version.

Edit:

And my motherboard is a z77 mpower.
