PC shut itself off during BF3 artifacts

Go to solution Solved by Sharif,

I does seem like the PSU is dying. Did you try to reseat all the power cables? A loose power cable can also cause these kinds of issues.

Solution is new PSU time;RIP Cooler master extreme you lived for 5+ years

Welp give reconnecting everything a go when you can, if that doesn't resolve the issue its probably time to get a new PSU.

i wanted to

solve you both as best answers  :D

i was playing bf3 with my friend when artifacts came up every where,it used to happen with another game (loudout) but a simple restart fixed it so i didn't bother,it happen sort of rarely

before i could tell my friend bye,the PC went dead and the power supply was hot and i tried pressing the switch ONCE but it didn't start so i switched of the power supply and let it cool

and after that i opened up Firefox and click on LTT bookmark and then i clicked the trouble shooting section, then i started to type this

Is the latest driver CCC 14.4? Because that as caused a lot of problems for some people.

Try either rolling back to 14.3 or try the 14.6 beta driver.

I didn't know that. Now I do.

Did your PC just shut off, or did it give you a BSoD?

If the PC just shut down ir can indicate a problem with the PSU, or other power delivery components.

when i had the problem with another game called loud out i would normally just restart and those artifacts would also appear in desktop but it would be fixed after RE

but this is my 1st time with bf3 and yes my PC directly just died

and my psu was hot and spicy

Looks like a PSU problem then. Do you a secondary one you can test?

Seeing that you get artifacts, it seems like the graphics card is to blame. It might short circuit the PSU. but I'm not 100% certain.

Try reseating the graphics card in the PCIe slot and try reseating the power cables in the computer.

Can you try the PSU in a different computer?

Seems like your PSU is on the edge then, see if you can get it replaced. There's a program you can use to monitor wattage draw on your PSU it started with a "H" but I forgot the name.... you can give hwmonitor a go if you want.

Do which of the things?

To reseat the card, you just remove it from the PCIe slot and then you put it back in. The same thing goes for the power cables.

To test the PSU in a different computer, you just take the PSU out of your current computer, and then you install it in a different computer.

i could have but i don't have the time becasue i have EXAMs Morrow

We can do this another day then. Just mention me and I'll come back. Other people will likely do the same.

Reseating your GPU doesn't require you to disconnect all the power cables to everything just your GPU.(edited lol PSU)

If you can get your hands on another GPU to test that would be great too.

Give it a go when you have time. I'd only totally disconnect everything if I was doing some major troubleshooting trying to pin the problem down.

Till a another day then  but i will reset the gpu today as it won't take long

but before i pause the investigation

1) is safe to play games/watch movies?

2)how can i get the problem to happen again,as it happens rarely? (when i troubleshoot it)

3)should i continue folding?

Watching movies should be just fine. Gaming? I probably wouldn't do that if your worried.(probably the perfect time to catch up on some anime eh? ehhhhh??? EHHH? *cough* ok I'll shut up now)

Just trail and error and doing the same thing in a attempt to replicate the problem.

I wouldn't continue folding for now.

But when your up and running stable with the problem fixed then FOLD AWAY!

  1. The PSU is shutting your system down to avoid damage, so it should be safe. But don't tempt fate.
  2. This is one of the problems with diagnosing perodic errors. But try playing games as that seem to do the trick.
  3. I don't know much about folding, but if you are folding on your GPU and/or CPU, it will stress the PSU and might cause a shut down. Again don't tempt fate.
