hello everyone, i'm facing a problem right now with my new rig

my pc specs are :

I5-4670K

Cooler Master Hyper 212x with push-pull config

MSI Z97 gaming 3

Vengeance RAM 2x4gb 1600mhz

2 western digital 500gb 5400rpm hdd

120gb kingston hyperx 3k ssd

sapphire amd hd 7950 vapor-x

super flower golden green hx 600w 80+ gold

1 case fan

ok, so the problem i'm facing is that everytime i cold boot my pc, it will turn on for about 5-10 minutes and then it will restart by itself and says that "previous overclocking has failed" screen

while that is understandable if i do any overclocking at all, but the thing is i didn't do any overclocking at all when i had this problem, everything is at stock clock

but that problem only occurred when i cold boot the pc, meaning i booted it up after 3-5 hours off time.

but if i just go into the bios after the problem occurred then exit and save without changing any setting in the bios it will run fine afterwards, so only the first cold boot is like that

i tried memtest+ and my memory got 4 passes, i ran prime95 small ffts and blend test and it ran fine if it's AFTER the problem occured, i have updated the bios and it is still like this

my guess is that the problem lies with the motherboard

please help me, i really don't know what to do anymore

Hello,

Your best bet would be to clear CMOS, basically a restore to factory settings button which will completely remove any overclocking. Have you machine turned off and there is a button at the back on the Motherboard I/O, hold it down for 5 seconds and then turn your machine on and you will be asked to run setup by pressing F1; just follow the on screen instructions. This image shows how:

If this does not clear CMOS for whatever reason please post here and I will show an alternate way that requires opening up your computer case.

Thanks,

I prefer cracking it open myself.. It usually works because you know what's going on.

Same here, but pressing a button at the back of your motherboard is simplier and easier to explain  :)

Unless the button is broken. But I see the use of it. I can just never get to that side of my pc without doing parkour.. :P

Did you overclock in the BIOS or use some software?

If this doesn't work then put the battery so that it is flipped and touching the two contacts that the sides of the battery would not normally touch and hold it there for at least 5 seconds. That should definitely clear CMOS.

there's no led indicator on my motherboard

this is my motherboard

The manual I was reading had an LED indicator, I was linked to the wrong board by the MSI website. I will post back once I have read the correct manual.

Can you confirm that CMOS has been cleared i.e. when you start up your computer you get a "Run setup" screen that loads you into BIOS?

i tried the battery method just now

but i need to let my pc off for now to see if there's any changes or not

but i checked the bios and the cmos is cleared as the settings are all changed to default again

just like the shorting out the pins did for me though, i'll try waiting for an hour or 2 to see if there's any changes

OK sounds like a good idea. Please let me know if you persist to have issues. I hope your computer has been fixed.  :)

yeah, i hope this will fix it

are there any chances that this is a hardware problem, as in motherboard defects or something? or is it probably just software related?

it's really annoying to have to boot your pc twice every time you turn it on  -_-

I think it sounds like the motherboard, you may need to talk to MSI customer support and/or RMA the board. Since you have cleared CMOS it is unlikely to be software. When you said you got a screen saying "previous overclock had failed" was it from windows, like a blue screen of death, or was it from the BIOS saying that you had a overclocking problem?

it's the bios

so i will be inside windows and suddenly my pc will turned itself off for 3-5 seconds, and then boot up again and shows the previous overclocking has failed message

the thing that makes me really confused is that this only happened for the cold boot, after that first initial cold boot it will run fine

i even tried doing prime95 blend and small fft for the whole day and nothing happened as long as it is after the cold boot

i've never encountered this kind of problem before in my life

Sounds like something you should definitely contact MSI for if it is not fixed after your next cold boot.

Did you check to make sure your bios doesn't need a update? If there is an update for it make sure to do it from the bios utility if there is one instead of windows.

Have you tested your PSU? Can you borrow another one to test? There might be a power delivery issue to the board causing the error.

i did update the bios using the m-flash thingy in the bios itself, not the live update program in the windows

at first, i thought it was the psu as well

so i changed my psu from seasonic s12ii 520w 80+ bronze to super flower golden green hx 600w 80+ gold

but nothing has changed,

i haven't tried turning it on again after i reseated the battery for now because i'm out of town right now, but i'll definitely try turning it on after i came back
