The view counts are on a timer, so they will update every X amount of minutes or x amount of hours, as it can slow the site down if they constantly get updated.

On some older topics its because they were started on vB5. Also could mention here that posts on off topic don't count on total post count.

@jonyman23

another would be that if you had created a thread in a subforum and the thread

was moved to another sub forum the shortcut will show 0 views.

especially if creating a thread in General Discussion and it was moved to an

appropriate subforum, the shortcut left in GD will show 0 views.

That's a loophole that IMHO is also used to get more views on subforum threads, people can post knowing it will be moved but it's still an effective double post until it moves off the first page of GD, where as if it was just posted straight into the sub forum it would only get large title viewership while still on the 'Recent topics' bar.

If that was removed maybe less would get dumped in GD, however I'm not sure how many people actually do it for that reason but I know thread dumping in GD is a huge issue on this forum.

@Askew

it really isn't a double post, just a shortcut pointing to the corrected thread-link.

only one real thread exists. if peeps reply to that thread, they are really posting

the the moved topic in the subforum. so if someone posts in GD and it is moved

to Off-Topic, views cease to be counted.

if posted in GD and moved to Graphics Cards, the views tally continues.

I didn't mean views as in 'view count' I meant it in terms of exposure (getting people to visually see the link to their thread)

I used the wrong words when I said double post also, I meant that it serves exactly as you said but instead of just one place for the thread title/link to be seen there are 2.

I'll put it a different way,

Let's say I'm about to post a topic that I know belongs in 'Liquid Cooling', if I post it straight into LC then it will appear on the 'Recent topcs' bar on the main page, and it will also appear in LC as it should.

But if I first post it into General Discussion, I know that a mod will come along and move it to LC, and I will now have my thread's link appear not only in LC and on the Recent Topics bar, but also in General Discussion while it remains on the front page, GD is high traffic and will get more people into my thread.

Posting a thread in GD that you know will be moved is currently a better strategy for getting more people in your thread/getting your question answered than putting it straight into the correct subforum.

the shortcuts expire after 24hours.

but the "strategy" can/will deserve move points and infraction points.

Yeah I can see that mods are trying new ways to kill the GD dumping, all I'm doing is pointing out a potential reason for some of it, if someone has a tech question they want answering it is most frequently answered in the first 30 minutes or not at all so shortcut expiration is not really important.

@Askew

noted, the noob population accounts for a great percentage of the "misplaced

threads". when it is a member 100+ posts (they should know better) then their

account is accessed the warning moved points. 3 move points usually will get a

PM from admin/mod warning member of infractions and results. if it becomes

habitual, steps are taken.

easiest thing for the community is to use the report function on each comment

when something like this has occurred. report/comment move to "XXXX" subforum.

it is very helpful to get the topic into the proper subforum for the quickest and

correct solutions. not many "answered" tags on misplaced topics.

I agree that the noob population accounts for the vast majority, and the lack of 'answered' tags is an issue but I don't think that can be solved easily without mods entering troubleshooting threads to see if it's been answered, and I don't consider that at all practical.

As a rough suggestion, perhaps the thread telling people how to use it could have it's title in red or be changed to 'please do this...' rather than 'this is how a feature works'.

Thanks for reading/replying anyway. :)
