Please don't buy this! ASUS slapped a GTX 780 cooler on the 290(X) DCU2 model, and half the heat pipes aren't actually in contact with anything. The GPU still reaches 90 degrees on 100% load.

That's not what TTL's review said. Check out the review of the 290X Matrix. It uses the same DCU2 cooler, he said it was hitting 90 degrees under 100% synthetic load.

<- this review confirms my results, it's just a few c hotter because it's a 290x and not a 290. asus advertizes 20% cooler temps (check) and 3x quieter performance (check) in comparison with reference.

Yeah, since getting my 290X lightnings, I've decided not to buy ASUS Graphics cards from now on, mostly because their Customer Service and warranty are horrible to deal with. From now on it'll just be ASUS motherboards for me. MSI are looking very solid at the moment.

I have had 3 bad AMD ASUS boards, these were AM3 though, i took a deep nose dive into AM3+ with ASUS, so far it is good.

As for the one person defending ASUS here, he obviously is either lying, or has a good sample, most users have terrible DCUII 290 cards.

There are literally tonnes of complaints about the 280x DCUII artifacting too.

Most reviews I checked out had good results. My card is also good. The fact that you see a lot of complaints is due to the fact that unsatisfied customers are always the loudest. Even if only 10% of the cards were defective (not a very good number but still leaves a good chance for your card to be good), out of thousands of costumers you are still bound to see a lot of complaints on the internet. You can't really take those complaints as proof that "most" of dcuii cards are bad.

No, WE EXPECT better temps all around, ASUS sure like to talk the talk it seems.

You are talking to a guy who can cool an LN2 voltage biosed GTX 480 on air and top 660Ti's and match 7950's LOL, this from ASUS is unacceptable.

And yes you are correct, 3 fans and longer, at a cheaper price with better thermals = WIN!

Except 1) some cases don't fit such long cards and 2) this thread is about the asus card being cheaper and coming with a free headset.

With the quiet bios asus allowed for the highest temps the gpu can take in exchange for the quietest operation they could grant. With the performance bios the card runs a bit louder (and it's still fairly quiet I can tell you that) but ensures good temperatures and maximum performance. If you're not happy with THOSE temps then you can use afterburner to set a custom fan profile.

The complaint has been that it runs at 85+ c. This is not true, at least not with my card. What are you using to cool that 480? Custom fans? I doubt they will be as quiet as the asus ones. If you run the asus fans at 100% you can get cooler of course, as it is fans only run at 40% even at full load and I still get 70ish c.

What's the point in buying a card that is advertised as running quieter and cooler, when you can only have one of those options at a time? After 6 hours of Unigine Valley looped, my 290X Lightning was hitting 73 C with a 1215MHz core and 1600MHz memory.

Yes, I know it's a triple slot card, but just look at something like the MSI Gaming. It runs cooler and quieter than the DCU2 model.
