"Leaked BIOS Enables Pentium Anniversary Edition OC on Some MSI H97 Boards"

http://www.techpowerup.com/202040/leaked-bios-enables-pentium-anniversary-edition-oc-on-some-msi-h97-boards.html

So this BIOS allows these Pentium chips to reach 4.5GHz, but who uses them? Why don't they (Intel) just unlock multiplier-only overclock on all H97 boards?

I wish Intel would leave this vulnerability open.

They won't though.

I wish they would have released an unlocked i3. If they were to unlock the multiplier-only OC on all H97 boards, the Z97 boards wouldn't be worth producing. Most people would just buy the H97 and save money.

agreed and also that would be cool for an unlocked i3

The Z97 (or future chipsets) would let you overclock ajusting voltage and base clock as well, going for higher clocks. The H97 could be "reserved" for more basic overclocks.

I know. What I meant was that the average Joe just throws a basic OC on their unlocked cpu. Most people don't mess with adjusting voltage and all that jazz.

I should be studying.

Overclocked i3's outperforming locked i5's oh noe... whats stupid is that we have locked cpu's to begin with, thanks amd really thanks.

I think that would be alleviated by proper binning and less CPUs. Ditch the 5 (or whatever it is) i3's and go with two, one locked and unlocked, and then bin them accordingly. That, or have one unlocked i3 out of the 5/whatever amount and then reduce the number of i5's and bin i5's accordingly. It'll make unlocked CPUs have more value and they'd sell way more i3's this way. At least then maybe it'd make sense to buy a dual-core CPU for over $110...

When exactly is Intel moving away from dual-core i3's anyway? Skylake/Cannonlake?
