You are actually better off buying the GA-970A-UD3P because of the revised vrm design. The 990X is better for multicard setups, but the vrm heatsinks are dreadful

the airflow in my case will handle the temps.

And the difference between them is just the vrm design?

The 970A-UD3P is more updated and it is better than the 990X in every way with the exception of SLI. Unless you're going to be running SLI, the 970A-UD3P is the board to get

I would go with the GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3P as well, just like what @Ryan Leech said.

It's just SLI. Everything else is better on the 970A-UD3P.
