Hey ltt, ive been playing a lot of war thunder of late and was wondering about other combat flight "sims" out there. Im planning to play H.A.W.X 2 and ace combat assault horizon, maybe not exactly flight sims but theyll probably entertain me for a time. Any other such games i should consider trying? i will be playing with a hotas setup so something in depth wouldnt bother me in the least

cliffs of dover or 1946? or both possibly?

cliffs of dover or 1946? or both possibly?

people are very divided on that matter.

google for yourself and make your own opinion about it.

1946 is rather old, but polished and lots of planes.

cliffs of dover is the newer one.

DCS series

Rise of Flight.  There is a free MP version on their website.

http://www.riseofflight.com

There's of course Arma 2 and 3.

it's more dedicated to land forces and Arma 2  has way more vehicles then 3.

flight models are not realistic but the flight model from Take on Helicopters will

be made available for Arma 3 soon.

Take On Helicopters has the "Take on Hinds" DLC.

I highly recommend anyone looking for flight sims to pick up Battlestations: Pacific on Steam. It's quite old, which means there's no one online, but that also means you can pick it up very cheaply, and the single player alone is worth it.

You can also control ships and submarines, which ultimately means there's a lot to do and you can easily get your money's worth.

Freespace 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. It was released way back in 1999, but I still have my original game discs for it. The thing that sucked was multiplayer for the game went away years and years ago due to no servers and not many people owning the game any more. But, it's been re released on STEAM for just $9.99. Being a 15 year old game the graphics are obviously not the best, but the story is great and the gameplay is excellent.

It was made by Volition, which back in 1999 was known for the highly popular Descent series. Freespace and Freespace 2 took the well known flight mechanics from the Descent series and set them in space instead. That's where the name Freespace comes from. I suggest that anyone who likes flight/dogfighting games to check it out.

It received a 91 on Metacritic back in 1999.

Depends, war thunders quite arcade like. The dcs series is pretty hardcore, then there's the battlestations games however I haven't played them.

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

DCS is an awesome game. The A10 is quite hardcore but if you start with f-15 or the russian fighters it's gonna be much easier in the beginning. The fighters in Flaming Cliffs 3 don't have clickable cockpits so there's less complicated stuff to do during flight :)

You meant "Flaming Cliffs 3"? It's not exactly hardcore but more towards simple sim... Good to go if you're new to flight sim...

But other modules (or DLCs) in DCS is pretty hardcore... Or maybe you want to try Falcon BMS as well if you're into those study simulator. But let me warning you, Flaming Cliffs 3 took me around 1 week of learning to at least fly properly, give a better fight to the AIs and land my fighter at the airstrip properly. Last time I tried Falcon 4.0: Allied Force (one iteration of the study sim Falcon 4.0 like Falcon BMS) took me 1 month only to fly and land and survive in the air while fighting still like a noob. The learning curves are very different due to the details they have in study sim like A10, Ka50, P51D Mustang in DCS and Falcon series.

The only true combat sims have already been mentioned.

Myself I love Il2-Sturmovik and there's some stuff to know about 1946 and Cliffs of Dover.

So first  hands on 1946, this game is a combination of the older versions and is a sim that hees been highly modded by the community. The game itself is old and the graphics are waaaay behind, that is till you download the mods. (note that this can go up to 20GB). What you want to get there is HSFX 7.0, check the website http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewforum&f=88 for more stuff on the mods. Do note that you need to have a back-up of the game when modding and that you need to download and install all patches in order!!! (remember old game!)

Online is still very active, and loads of fun. I recommend to visit TeamSpeak servers of the servers you might want to play on because the community is very nice and kind. On new pilots they mostly are very helpfull.

Now on Il-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover, the latest version till Il2 Battle of stalingrad will be released. This game is extremely limited compared to 1946 and doesn't run well! No matter how decent your system is, the game is poorly optimized and stuttering is inevatible (however you spell that). Plane choice is just a handfull and around 20 planes (against 150+/- on Il2 Sturmovik 1946, that is due to the modding though) that is in total I am afraid. Despite that the game looks great and you will find the very same community online there. It's the same clans, or better call them fightersquads and jägdgeschwaders (means the same btw) who run and own servers. Also there they will help you to figure out the games.

Both games, can be played and should be played on full realism. This means any kind of failure might happen during flight, the weather effects your flight, ammo and fuel need to be selected properly and many more. The damage planes can receive is very, very high and every plane has it's weak spot. Even bombing is realistic as you can use actual "Bombing Tables" to figure out when to drop the bombload on a target (this goes for Il2 1946 only as far as I know). The fun off full realism is that anything can happen and the slightest issue on the plane can have dramatic consquences. Best part is when flying back from combat with a heavy damaged plane, try to land that!

But be aware! Loads of online pilots use TrackIR or things like that. Meaning that they have a more smooth and easier way to move around in the cockpit! They can spot you much faster than you because of the use of mouse/joystick to move the camera. And never fly straight for more than 30 seconds, It get's you killed :D Also try to gain a lot of altitude (watch the fuel mixture) before heading into a dogfight.

Hope this helps!
