Title says it. I've been looking around for new display setup, and plan on either 1080p eyefinity or 1440p.

After looking around for benchmarks and stuffs, I notice that 1 monitor 1080p vs 1440p doesn't really scale with pixel count.

2560x1440 = 1.7 times the pixels of 1920x1080.

a random game benchmark says: 1440p = 60 fps, 1080p = 86 fps.

while my math counts:

1080p = 1.7 x 1440p fps = 1.7 x 60 = 102 fps.

or even:

1440p = 0.56 x 1080p fps = 0.56 x 86 fps = 48 fps.

Other benchmarks results also doesn't scale that badly on higher resolution, so I'm thinking that there might be some base graphic processes that doesn't get affected by resolution, making higher resolution much more feasible.

If resolution doesn't affect fps THAT much, I will go for eyefinity with my 2x R9 280x.

I intend to use the monitors for multitasking work, and then use it for eyefinity gaming whenever it's possible.

Resolution directly effects FPS as you increase FPS you decrease performance, it is not 1:1 though

@ShadowCaptain Yeah, but since 280x CF is overkill for 1080p, I figure I'll go for better display config. I just don't know whether 5760 x1080 will work well enough with the cards. If not, I'll just go for 1440p display.

@Paralectic the 280x CF is already bought (and can't be returned), now I just want to figure out which display(s) to go for.

Disagree, its perfect for 1080p. You are looking at sub 60fps when gaming at 1440p if using ultra settings, and worse if using surround

@ShadowCaptain Wow I didn't know that. Most game benchmarks I saw keeps saying >120fps on 1080p, which is faaaaar too much for my 60hz monitor. Perhaps the games are outdated lol.

Thanks!

wow no, even a 780ti would not push 120fps - in all games at 1080p

In fact for many games it wont even achieve 60fps at 1080p on Ultra

BF4 for example (these are on ultra, you could drop settings down to boost fps)

1080p Ultra - 40fps

1600p Ultra - 26fps

5760x Ultra - 18fps

You must have looked at SLI benches.  Most modern decent looking triple A's will not let even a 780Ti do 120fps

@ShadowCaptain Those are very helpful! Especially the bf4 benchmarks, with 1440p, 4K, and eyefinity 1080p results.

Based on other benchmarks I saw, 280x CF is around 30% stronger than a single 780, and the eyefinity benchmark on bf4 says 780 gets 18 min fps and 26 avg. Which means around 23 min fps and 33 avg on 280x CF(considering no issue), pretty damn low.

Now I'm trying to weigh whether Ultra config worth that much on games I play. If not, I might still go for eyefinity. If Ultra is too good to pass, i'll just get one or two cheaper 1080 displays(120-150$) for multitasking work.

Thanks for the insight.

@Pomfinator Yeah, and some other benchmarks just go for high, not ultra. My bad.
