FL studio is a very good software for professional use and for recreational.  It's very easy to pick up and you can make very good music with it.  It allows midi control and recording, so you should be able to record with your guitar given you have the hardware to do so.  It has excellent 3rd party plugins as well allowing you to use more filters, mixers, synths, ect.

You might see this software as "Fruity Loops"  That's what "FL" stands for.

Actually the FL originally came from FLTK (Fast Light Tool Kit) that is a special fl_ library for c++ (and also python and other languages) FL Studio is made using FLTK, but then they called the FL 'Fruity Loops' because its more catchy. I think it just sounds like a cereal.

If you want a free FL Studio alternative: http://lmms.sourceforge.net/home.php

Mixxx is also a good mixing/DJing tool along the lines of Virtual DJ.

I don't think he wants to DJ though, he wants to record and work with his music from there.

Well, it's not just for DJing. Mixing can involve taking existing music (instruments, etc) and combining them into something that sounds completely different. Mixxx does just that.

Creating your own sequences/beats though, would need FL studio or equivalent.
