Hi!

For some reason my computer will no longer boot up. It worked perfectly 8 hours ago but now it shows no signs of life. When I turn the power on, the graphic card's LEDs are glowing, the startup button on the motherboard is glowing but the usual green LED is not.

Any idea what's the problem?

My Specs:

i5 Haswell @4.2
GTX 770 ASUS Overclocked
ASUS Z87-PRO
Be quiet Pure Power L8-CM-630W

Corsair 100i Water Cooling

PSU or motherboard failure. Worst case scenario.

Take out the CMOS battery, unplug it from the wall, display, etc., and let it sit for a while to see if that fixes the problem.

Will try that thanks

Are the fans spinning?

Nop, nothin at all, the only thing that happens is that the LED on the graphic card goes off when I try to start the computer

I do remember yesterday that when I plugged my USB Fan my keyboard stopped working, but when I removed the fan the keyboard started to work again, maybe that's a sign of PSU failure?

It's either a motherboard failure or the PSU lost (at least) its 5V rail. If the graphics card lights up, the 12V is probably ok.

It's worth trying the CMOS reset, but failing that you'll need to individually test the PSU and the MB to see which is dead.

Check if every cable is correctly plugged in. You can also try to get it running by removing your 770 and using the iGPU.

Also, you overclocked the cpu, what did you do with the voltage? If you overclocked it wrong there's a big chance you killed something.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

If none of the other suggestions work it will be worth checking the power supply, either use another one or a PSU rail tester :)

I did the overlock for like 8 months ago so I don't exactly remember the configuration, only that it was 4.2ghz. However the temps were not high, like 50-60 max during heavy load, so I don't think my overclocking is the issue, however I will try removing the GPU and start.

I'll wait 'till tomorrow before I do anything but if it's still not working I'll test with my old PSU.

Ok, so I tested with my old PSU and put the 24 pin and CPU POWER into the motherboard. Now the start button and graphic card starts to blink red instead of just glowing. I literally have no idea what's happening... help?  :o

The only things that's connected are the 24 PIN and CPU POWER connectors.

Took some pictures (have a h100i as a cooler):

Computer without any power

10299510_773451686008999_216384413200142

When I connect the graphic card, 24pin + CPU Power to the PSU and starts the computer:

10251955_773451642675670_552617734313226

After like 10-13 sec the graphic stops blinking:

10363623_773451666009001_829432867116742

The difference between my other PSU is that its blinking instead of just glowing.

So if I get it right, I got 3 alternatives?

1. Rebuild the computer from scratch and see if that solves the problem?

2. Pay a service to take a look at the PC?

3. Use the guarantee on my MOBO because the PSU is not the problem? And buy a new MOBO?

Is there anything else I can do?

check these, post back if nothing works

1: Reseat ram or exchange em with new or from someone else

2: Reset cmos & try starting up wtihout the hdd attached to it.

3: Try Exchanging PSU or unplug the wires to the startup pins on the mobo & use the shorting method to startup

4: Try changing the video card (pcie slot might be shorted) change the hdmi cable/

5: remove every other peripherals except keyboard to see if they are causing any problems.& finally that as well see if you can get into the bios atleast

6:Exhange the monitor

When i say 'exchange' i mean try it with an older one or get one from your friend , not buying a new one. POst back after you've done.

Details separate people.

1: I did that before but with no results

2: Going to try that tomorrow (no time left today) Just a question, do I just remove the CMOS (the round battery) to reset the CMOS?

3: Tried with another PSU, the result was that its blinking instead of glowing. I use the startup button thats attached to the mobo, the chassi connection are not plugged in.

4: Will try that tomorrow

5: Nothing is plugged in, no USB slots, only the PSU

6: No monitor plugged in.

It's pretty much: PSU Connected to MOBO (24-pin and CPU Power) and Graphic card -> Start the PSU -> The inbuilt start button on the MOBO is glowing red and the graphic card is glowing green -> Start using the MOBO method -> Nothing is happening, not even a sound or spinning fans -> after 10 sec the graphic cards stops to glow.

Using my other PSU just made the lights blink like every second

Yes , usually you have to wait a minute or so to let it completly discharge , (or i heard connecting the points with a wire, don't do it as i'm not sure) , Usually there's another option of using a jumper pin to clear CMOS settings but for that you need to refer to your motherboard, & switch the jumper pins to get it to reset ,

I think from what you explained so far , the problem lies with your GPU as for now or the mobo itself , if you have an old mobo lying around with the same socket (from a friend maybe) You can try that one to see it's not the issue with the CPU itself.

Good luck anyways , Post back tommorow after you've tried on a new video card.. B)

So I removed the CMOS battery and put it back in after a couple of minutes, nothing has changed, nothing is happening. Removing the GPU and my SSD didn't help as well. It's so frustrating that I can't find out what's the problem! ;/

Just noticed that I didn't wrote this on my first post .. -.-.. I have been having some random Bluescreen issues lately, 1 week it could be like 1 bluescreen a day, however sometimes not even a single bluescreen during a whole month, this was going on for like 4 months, but I couldn't figure out the problem. My CPU was at very low temps, with 1.22 Volt (if I remember correctly) @4.2 ghz, and I did several 10 hour stress tests with no failures. So I just didn't care about it.. My GPU that was overclocked also managed a 10 hour stress test.

But I guess this shows that it's the CPU after all?

Maybe.. BSOD is often caused by driver related or hardware level problems, since you did stress test the sh*t outta both of them . i think it was a later corrupted hardware related later down the line(maybe a later driver update did it), this is a maybe, you can try clearing the cmos again   by removing the battery & pressing down the power button several times afterwards after 3 minutes or so , try reseat everything & start it up again, if that fails again , can you get a spare cpu to try on with your mobo? but first use your cpu on a different mobo to see if it runs properly , then decide to chage/buy a mobo,

Please quote this post(a part of it) along with the reply after you tried them. Good luck

led goes off when trying to boot possible PSU problem, do you have a multimeter and the ability to test the rail voltages, last time my psu died i would press the power button the light would go off and the fan would turn about 10 degrees or try to turn, try removing the gpu if you have onboard graphics that way it will pull less current when trying to start up and you may get a boot.

I just did that but no sign of life, no fans spinning, no sounds, just the red startup button glowing.. However, I did smell like something was burned around the CMOS battery area, however there were no smoke, and the PSU did not smell burned. I dunno if this is just me being sad and wierd because its not working but I do smell a like its burned when I put the power on.

EDIT: I never touched the motherboard before, no overclocking or BIOS updates

EDIT2: And I have no Haswell socket cpu or mobo that I can use, and no friends that have it either.

Wow! ain't we in a pickle. Well i guess it's time for you to greet a local repair guys they should do all the testing for you , you don't need to buy a new one to see if it's damaged & then pay for something else, the best option now is for the repair guys to handle it .. But make sure you got enough cash before handing it over to them , they often add up more things to get cash outta you , but since we'vew tried most that we can , you'd better off let those guys find the cause.. Do try everything you can before handing it over to them... Post back your progress.. & Good luck
