Don't give any cares about features. I want the quietest, and fasted performing GPU. Which should I get, I will be over clocking and also which cooler design should I get?

hmm quietest and fastest don't really mix together

or do they?

Do you intend to watercool the card in the future?

Where's @Sonefiler? He'll definitely recommend the PowerColor PCS+ R9 290X. There's also the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290X. As for the GTX 780, EVGA's ACX, FTW, Classified, and K|NGP|N comes to mind - I don't know about the others.

Not sure why it is 290x vs 780 when the 290 is basically the X version anyway.

Edit: I am on a single 1080p display.

Here are some benchmarks of the 780 vs 290X

As far as the quietest, I am not sure.  I have heard great things about the Vapor X R9 290X

Video of how loud it is

I thought the 290x were binned better....

LOL, people need to stop beleiving everything get's binned.

Back in old Radeon 5 series, the 5850 was simply a cut down 5870 which could OC just as well as it's brother if not better.

not exactly

http://www.amd.com/en-gb/products/graphics/desktop/r9

the 290X has more stream processors than the 290

2816 in the 290X and 2560 in the 290

I can't confirm that, but it's probably true. Basically, X-series cards are great off the bat, but the R7 260, R9 270, R9 280, and R9 290 have the potential to overclock pass the R7 260X, R9 270X, R9 280X, and R9 290X, but they can be bad overclockers and either not overclock well at all or can only OC (close) to the X-series' specs without becoming unstable. Also, X-series can probably overclock better than non-X cards.

there is also one point to add

for example the 280 and 280X or the 290 and the 290X

the number of stream processors is different for the X and non-X cards

the 290X has 2816 while the 290 has 2560

the 280X has 2048 while the 280 has 1792

only the 270 and 270X have the same amount of stream processors

I believe that Nvidia does better at 1080p gaming than AMD on this one and they definatley produce less heat.  so even though I'm a fan of AMD it sounds like you would be happier with a GTX 780.

Hate AMD naming scheme....

I know... Hey, at least they have a linear-ish naming scheme and don't have so many +.1 GHz variants like Intel. Take that, bluey.

The R9 280 and 280X are priced less than or equal to the GTX 760 and 770 while performing slightly better at 1080p gaming. The R9 270(X) also cost a bit less than the GTX 760 and is on par or slightly worse that it or even better in certain games. I don't want to sound like a fanboy, which I probably just did, but after the mining craze, AMD's offering good GPUs at nice prices. The only issue is the temp. of the R9 290(X)'s reference and sometimes non-reference along with power consumption and lack of certain features like CUDA which people would find useful in a working field.

I was thinking more on the high end of things GTX780 and GTX 780ti range. Compare those cards with the AMD offerings and the Nvidia cards tend to do better at 1080p with AMD pulling away at higher resolutions.

Eh, those high-end GPUs are overkill for 1080p anyway. It's better and fun to watch them drop to their knees at 1440p.  :D
