question about gpu layout

okay so i have the 780 ti dcii oc version from asus. I'm really wanting to put another one in sli. I'm wondering if i can have my top card in the 1st pci slot...skip a pci slot and put the second card in the third slot down to aid in not overheating the top card. will it work and will it work as well as if i were putting it in the second slot. also MB is Asus Maximus vii hero, Thanks

 

 

edit : after opening my eyeballs it probably wont work with this mobo/case. but the question still stands for other set-ups

You can do that, but you don't have to.

Yes you should be able to just make sure you connect the sli bridge

only the red slots are the one which supports SLi mode
