So I'm buying a new subwoofer for my audio setup but being the newb that i am i need some help basically what i need to know is if the powered 3.5mm output from my PC will damage the passive inputs on my new sub

if you bought a passive subwoofer, you will need to buy an amp. the 3.5mm output will not power a subwoofer.

As an audiophile I would recommend buying a nice system with a built in amp. If you already bought the sub, bob345 is correct.

I'm not an audiophile, I'm just really picky about my music... and my headphones... and my speakers... and my microphone. Other than that, I'm totally not an audiophile.

Oh yea, think about where the sub should be placed and where your head will be while listening. When I went around the room doing stuff and using the speakers, moving from center of the room to the corner of the room, the bass changes drastically.

i think my original post may not have been perfectly clear the subwoofer is a powered unit and i know that the 3.5mm outputs on PC's are powered and i've heard that using a powered output to connect to the input of a powered unit is bad so i just wanted to get your opinions on whether or not it will actually cause any substantial damage

PC outputs will not damage the input on any consumer product.
