THE BUILD PLAN

https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=wish_lists&wlcId=301961&action=wish_lists

Coolermaster HAF XB Case

Corsair RM-650 80 Plus Gold Power Supply

ASUS Z97-PRO WiFi/AC Motherboard

Corsair Dominator Platinum 1600 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3

Intel Core i5 4670K

Corsair Hydro Series H100i CPU Cooler

1x EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Dual SC ACX 4GB (more later for more FPS)

Intel 530 Series 240GB SSD

Why are you upgrading?

Generally hated the weight and maneuverability of pcs so used to have a Dell Studio 17inch which was a beast of a laptop. After the screen stopped working I got a 3rd job and bought after much toil an $800 Acer Aspire-m ultrabook. I still have this but it’s basically worthless because of the “windows 8.1 connectivity issue” which after trying to fix spread to both wifi and Ethernet. No downloading and no youtube. Bye bye useless laptop.

Aims
Gaming + Sound Processing
Battlefield 4, Arma 3, Day Z standalone, Hardline (when its released)
Ableton, Cubase

Aside from running these programs and games. There are some things that are very important due to the cost of my build.

1)    LONGETIVITY -Ideally lasts 10 years and only features upgrades that are required to access new technology. THAT MEANS NO FAILURES.

2)    UPGRADING- I need to be able to increase this computers features over time with minimal replacement of parts.

3)    AESTHETICS -  for a 3500 dollar computer it’s going to make my balls drop when I look at it and I wanted it to look different to just your standard mid tower gaming rig and I wanted it to have something in it that made it unique.

4)    LOW TEMPERATURE – I knew that if I wanted the parts to last as long as possible, I would need some significant cooling, but a full water cooling set up was super expensive and difficult to implement in a small case.

5)    BENCHMARKS – I want the best benchmarks out of the most bang for your buck parts – it doesn’t have to always be the top product.

Budget & Location
$3500AUD
Basically as much as it takes to make this thing amazing without hating myself.

Australia

Monitors
Samsung 1080p S24B300H (slightly diff. model to the one in the link.)
A 55inch Sony Bravia 1080p LCD

Peripherals
Windows 8.1
Razer Black Mamba
Razer Deathstalker Essential Slim
(considering changing this because I need led lighting and I’d like some macro keys)

Yamaha 500W HTR-6130 5.1 Surround

Currently it only has a few more parts to go in, and is working wonderfully with base temperatures in the case of 25 degrees and not breaching 30 degrees celcius.  This is without some of the fans, the ssd and with a borrowed graphics card until I can get my hands on that lovely evga.

Please let me know what you think, I’ve pretty much exclusively used linus tech tips as my guide on building and picking the parts for this computer so a massive thank you to him and linustech tips staff. I'm a total noob and I successfully built a working custom rig that is pretty amazing with your help.
I will attach a video and photos featuring all the benchmarks of the finished build and a run-through of how I went about the build when its finally finished. I'll also unveil the special unique feature that i've been working on.
cheers and thanks for reading.

First off, a warm welcome to the forum,

The specs are good for a gaming rig for now , But Future proofing i think you need the latest top tier intel dual xeon 12 core each CPU to last atleast 10 years , because the Processing economy is changing like 2x perfomance per year on each new release. the i5 will be down in probably 3-4 years in terms of sheer perfomance & gpu will be better than ever in 5 years & this will be outdated as well,  As RP said , there is no future proofing unless you're ready to make it rain money.

But in case of your sound setup , it's pretty good , there are tons of options to make that one "better" , but what you have now i think will be good for that for 10 years or so. until something that really rattles the industry comes out , this will be more than future proofed

Details separate people.

There is nothing future proof. Its good for now and 2 years from now, and then you need to upgrade you gpu

CPU: Intel I7 4790K 4.8 Ghz || Mobo: ASUS ROG Maximus Hero 6 Z87 || Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB 1600 Mhz || GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Ti STRIX || Storage: 2 x SSD Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB RAID 0 HDD Western Digital 1 TB Black || PSU: Corsair AX 860 watt || Cooling: 2 x AF 140mm (front), 2 AF120 Blue LED (bottom and back), 2 SP120 (top on radiator) ||  CPU cooler: Corsair H100i GTX || Case: Corsair obsidian 750D <3 <3 <3

hey guys,
haha obviously a little brash with "future proof" hence the quotation marks. More specifically, what i'm aiming for is:

1 - the maximum amount of hours out of each device due to solid cooling and well managed build to ensure no shorts or dust/heat damage.
2- hardware that is likely to be compatible with future tech, BUT

3 - if it costs a billion for not much more in terms of performance, no dice. aka: bang for your buck.

- I totally agree with Tech Dreamer - the cpu is totally less than it could be for the setup and in terms of future tech. However i7 has had some issues with BF4 (my main play time) , im not doing video or image editing, and i7's cost HEAPS more for not a massive increase in performance that i will actually use. CPU repacement will be coming in a few years, but then I can buy something crazy.

- what do you guys think about dual sli 770 dual sc acxs? id need a bigger power supply, but i wonder how you think dual 770s will compete with say, the titan third parties coming out right now?
I'd have loved a pair of 780ti's, but i'd have to sell BOTH kidney's but i think i'd die.

- Initial aspire-m was plagued with 8.1 connectivity issue. many youtube vids on it . also horrendous rubber banding with basically all games because it only had an nvidia 640m, oh and no 5.1 surround or spdif out..

thanks guys,

comments on the likely parts in that build that will need to be replaced in 5 years?

but only due to outdating. assume that the part works perfectly and overclocks well all this time.

OP what you want is a core i7-4770K (or 4790K) and a GTX 780 or R9 290...the GPU will need upgrades over time and the i7 will also be considered obsolete for gaming in probably 4-5 years MAXIMUM...so as for now this is basicaly ''as future proof as possible'' while still keeping it ''budget oriented'' and Bang for the buck isnt too bad...otherwise you are looking at i7-4930K socket 2011 motherboard and SLI high-end GPU...talking MAJOR bucks here...

if you want the CPU to last 10 years...it will probably not...

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR
