Why are gpus more expensive than cpus even though they are slower.

They aren't slower; they can do many more floating point operations per second than a CPU. Their frequency may be lower, but frequency is meaningless when you aren't comparing two products of the same architecture.

Yup. I think I saw that late last year. Most simplistic way to explain the difference.

Another point... GPU's are not always more expensive than processors, a 3930k costs as much as a 680 and a 3970x is Titan money.
