Lagging Stream from NAS

Go to solution Solved by DraconisMaximus,

VLC just doesn't do well streaming directly over the network. It has to do with the way it loads / buffers.

As a per device alternative to VLC, look into Kodi.

Jellyfin does not have a PS5 app. There is a Samsung TV app, but it has to be sideloaded.

For an alternative to Plex or Jellyfin you could try Emby. It has apps for both of those and more.

You do need a paid license to use many features but it is far less expensive than Plex and has better privacy options.

As far as Jellyfin not finding everything. Make sure your files are named and organized in line with the Jellyfin documentation and are in a compatible format.

Also make sure that Jellyfin has the correct permissions to access the files and write metadata near them.

Hello guys, I have a question, and I need some help from where to start from, and what can I do.

So, in my house I have my main PC, a PC being used as a NAS, for backup, storage and will be a media library/stream connected via cable to my ISP modem/router, a TV, a notebook and a PS5 connected via WiFi to the same Router/Modem. I have a 700mb/s internet connection, and that is all right, I, at the moment, don't need more. My issue is, when I'm streaming from my server to my PC, I usually open the VLC in my PC and open the file that's in my NAS, and try to watch it, but more often than not it gets laggy, and sometimes takes sometimes to load. I wish I could streamline it a little better, and I need help to where can I start, and what can I do. So let's go with the configs.

Main PC:
Ryzen 9 9950X3D

Motherboard Gigabyte B650M AORUS ELITE AX

Ram: 2x 16gb Kingston Fury Beast 6000Mhz

Storage: 2x 1 TB NVME Storage

OS: Win 11 x64

Server Info:
CPU: Ryzen 5500

Motherboard:  ASRock B550 PG Riptide

Ram: 16 gb

Storage: 7 tbs

OS: Unraid

Both PCs have a 850w gold Power Supply, but I forgot which model they are for each one.

I'm kinda new to all of this, and I don't know where to begin this. I tried Plex, but had to uninstall since the free versions didn't fulfill my needs, but I could try the paid version, or some other alternative, or what else could I do? Thanks in advance.

Edit

P.S.: I forgot to say, both my PC and the NAS has a 2.5gb network installed, but they are connected to a Gigabit router/modem

This is all done in the same house, correct? What about plex didn't fulfil your needs? That will help narrow down what options you have. But off the top of my head, I'd say Jellyfin is a solid alternative. With Plex's recent price increase, it is REALLY difficult to recommend it on the paid side.

It didn't find all my library. I don't know if misconfigured, or what, but it didn't find my complete library, and I found the UI a little hard to navigate. I've tried to update the library, but I could never really find the option to do it on my TV, for example, and I wanted something that was a little simpler on my PC, like choosing a file and watching a movie or a series. If there was an option like a VLC with Plex, that I could choose where my library is and auto refresh in like every 30 minutes, or I could choose which file I wanted to play... And since I have downloaded stuff, ripped DVD's and BluRays, something compatible with multiple formats would be great.

After writing all of this, I think I might be asking too much out of a single aplication

And another thing... Is Jellyfin easy to install on a Samsung TV or PS5? And yes, everything is in the same apartment. My PC and my server are on a bedroom turned office, and the tv and PS5 are both in the living room

Jelly fin supports less devices than Plex.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Thanks, I'll take a look at everything you said! Already taking a look at Kodi, and I'll check Jellyfin and Emby to stream on my TV! Thanks again, that's a start!
