A family member has been having wifi download speed issues as of late. They are using Win 10 and have previously been using a cheap TPLink USB dongle. It had been working fine up until recently (sadly I don't have a speed for before it slowed down).

-The plan is 450 download 10 upload in Mbps (from now on I will be talking in terms of download speed)

-They were only getting 2-3 Mbps download

-Works just fine when Ethernet is plugged in

I decided to tell him the buy this adapter

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Bluetooth-Ultra-Low-Archer-TX3000E/dp/B07ZV2CJL2/

After installing the adapter in the top x1 slot  of his B450M Asrock Steel Legend motherboard, this happened (pc specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2H8jZc)

-Download speed increased to ~10 Mbps

I get similar results when I used my Gigabyte antenna that was included with my motherboard, which gets 350 on my personal computer.

What could be causing this issue?

I am lost as I don't know what else to do.

Edit: As of this post, I am currently reading through the mobo quick start quide.

Interference. Keep in mind that walls and other obsticals will cause issues. Placement of the router can be important. For example directly above and below the router will be dead zones due to the WiFi signal coming off the antennas in a doughnut shape.

Other WiFi networks on the same or adjacent channels can cause issues. For example 2.4 Ghz at least in the US only has channels 1 - 11 usable. Channels 1,6,11 are the only channels that dont overlap. If you have lots a neighbors close they could be clogging the spectrum. Even now days 5 Ghz has started getting full. THe issue with 5 Ghz is part of the spectrum is shared with radar (DFS Channels), in order to use these channels additional certifications are needed and many routers thus dont support DFS channels.

Other devices using the same spectrum. 2.4 Ghz is used by Bluetooth, Microwaves and other wireless devices (Mice, keyboards cordless phones). Ive seen 5 Ghz used to an extent on other devices as well.

You might have to reconfigure the network. IF you have an Android device, download WiFi analyzer. This will allow you to check the spectrum. Check to see what WiFi channels could be free. Also will allow you to check signal strength thru the house.

Other than that you can try changing the WiFi channels, to see if that helps. Also keep in mind that higher bands like 5 and 6 Ghz has less range and penetration power. So that could be an issue. 2.4 Ghz is much better for penetration and distance, but can be a bit slower. This is important because WiFi prioritizes stability over speed. Meaning the further you get out from the router, the slower the link speed will be.

You might also try moving the router, for most this is hard to do. But putting the router up higher can help spread the signal. Try moving the antenna of the WiFi card around.

If all else fails, replacing the router with a Mesh system will likely be the solution. But that potentially comes with its own challenges depending on the ISP/Internet type.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

How far from the Router is the PC?  What parts of the house are in the way?

What speeds do you get plugged in by wire?  What wifi speeds do you get on your phone at the PC's location?  Next to the router?

-The router is currently in the basement  behind about two walls, although my personal computer is only behind one American wall (drywall and some noise insulation) (will have a measurement in ft once I'm home), but still gets ~350Mbps (down)

-with a wire, I get the full 450 Mbps (upload is unaffected [other than loss from wifi vs wired] on both computers)

-will test with my phone when I am home

-Both computers are in the basement with the router being elevated compared to the two computers

Will download and report back on what I find.

I should also mention that the 2-3 Mbps number was taken at the spot the family member's pc will be(with the cheap dongle)

All other numbers were taken with their pc next to mine (closer and less obstructed [maybe?] from the router).

Wait.  The 2-3Mbps number is with your phone or laptop?  The family members PC isn't even there yet?

The 2-3 number is from when the family members computer when they were using the Wifi dongle I'm their room(we live in the same house).

All the other numbers were after I moved it to my room for testing.

Both computers are desktops

Might get better Wifi with a positional antenna...  I use this.
