so for most part I am pretty ignorant about this and mostly researching because I am in the situation where I need a new laptop and storage is an issue. I am also considering getting a macbook because at least seem to be a better option in current market but tbd and not as relevent other than the fact I might have file types in both Mac and PC to store. Mostly asking what should I be making in this situation? I dont store that much but I would guess having access to close to 10TB would still be the minimum goal if putting this much effort in. Also how does it work with run time and dealing with things like power outs? I am also moving so this is a big inconvenient to do at this point. I have no backup power in my current house either but I expect to be traveling quite a bit. Pretty much asking for help to figure out what I should do. I do have a lot of pieces of an old build PC from a few years ago that I believe does have 32gb of ram DDR and other factors if that helps.

What do you mean by storage is an issue? What issues are you having with storage?

10GB is kinda tiny space wise, I'd probably use the free tier of Google drive for that little data.

What pieces do you have?

Do you have multiple systems you want to access this data from? What speed do you need?

I have 3 computers and a phone I guess so for devices I have a decent bit of things to deal with. I miss typed because I am tired I meant 10TB not GBs but ye 10 GBs is pointless to deal with. Speed I guess is up for debate. Mostly would be storage and protecting data more so than a speed issue but probably dont want it giga slow either. I pretty much have a old gaming computer aka like 4 years old minus like 1 or 2 parts. So I have most pieces available to me. I ended up using very little when I built my current setup because I transitioned to DDR 5. I only kept my graphics card but I still have a 2080 super lying around.  I do have things that are sensitive data wise so that is also part of why I perfer to not have on a google drive but to some degree I have just been dealing with it on multiple local drives. Still is a pain since I dont have data that easily accessible from different systems because I do travel from work so that can be an issue.

Ok so this boils down to.

Random desktop with 2 drives mirrrored (so theres a live COPY NOT A BACKUP!!!!)

Install windows ltsc

Share folders in network.

Put like tailscale on it so you have a vpn aka br able to connect from outside the network

Dot he neccesary stuff in the network for it.

Install backblaze computer backup to have a offsite backup
