Altium. But probably not extensively. I just threw it in there just in case though.

Looks to be windows only, so that rules out Macs which would have been a real winner here for you. I see you don't plan to use it extensively, but Is Altium something you must be able to run? I assume for classes or something

Altium doesn't have a Mac-native version, so it'll have to be a Windows machine; the MacBook Air that Whispous mentioned is awesome, but you don't want to be running key tools through a VM.

You'll have a tricky time finding a brand new system that costs under $1K CAD with a 1TB drive, so if you can go above budget (say, up to $1,250) that would be great. But if you do want to stick to that ceiling, it looks like your best bet might be an open-box ASUS VivoBook S14 at Best Buy. I would also consider Lenovo, although my pick in this category would probably be the Yoga Slim 7i that sits closer to $1,200-$1,300.

If you don't need Visual Studio and you can use a CAD program that runs on MacOS, I'd 10000% recommend a macbook. Might need to be a refuurb m3 to get it under a grand, but Apple, as much as I hate the company and their software, win across the board on your wishes

I'll try to get some $$$ and stretch it up a little. What do you think about refurbs?

Refurbs are great so long as the system itself meets your needs. Open box is basically a refurb, just so fresh that it's virtually unused (say, someone who took it back during the return period).

Macbook Air m4 16gb. Unbeatable battery life for a machine capable of performing decent coding and CAD for $1k. Stingy on storage, though and without the extra ports you want - half easily solvable with a couple of dongles.

Slightly unrelated to main post. But im also looking for a laptop, came out to the base macbook air m4. However i dont have/am not really planning on getting other apple products (i/e airpods and iphone). Is macbook still a good choice or is it extremely locked down on non apple products (not being able to connect in some way to my galaxy buds, and possibly also s24)

You can connect a Mac to any standard bluetooth earbuds, what would you want to connect the phone to it for? It'll connect by USB for data transfer if that's what you mean

Yeh would just be for file transfer. Thanks for the answer, gets me a bit closer to finding a good choice for myself

I know quite a few people who use Android phones and Macs. The software isn't as tightly integrated, of course, but if you're just hoping to copy files over or pair your favourite earbuds, you're more than fine.
