windows 11 Windows DWM question.

Recently, I have become curious about some of the tools people have used to tweak or "rice" Windows 11 and Windows 10. I've done some simple theming and benchmarking on Windows 11 to see how things run. I will not mention any specific names as some of the tools were third party but I am wondering how most of them work. For example, if I utilized a tool that changes core window behavior to almost mimic hyprland, is that simply just an application layer over the native Desktop Window Manager(DWM) that coordinates with DWM for the desired visual window effect?

Also, I noticed when I am using certain apps to change window behavior, DWM is still running. I'm not super well educated on Windows or tech in general (trying to learn). I know with Linux you can switch to different compositors/DEs/WMs/etc. Is that even hypothetically possible? Or if the whole OS built around DWM? I know I could just ask the AI lords but I trust and appreciate human explanation more.

I havent been into modding my windows GUI since W7 BUT I think you are right on the money with that statement.

 

DWM is basically the compositor of Windows.

Fu$$ around and find out. Either use the OS as is and do your actual work, or rice around and spend all time adjusting.fixing and re-installing. Nothing wrong with the latter, you just need to have the correct expectations. This applies to all OS.

 

All those Linux/Windows YouTubers often show their "work" in a VM. That should tell you how practical the OS us after they butchered it. 

 

Whatever apps and scripts you use is up to you. Just don't blame MS if you have problems.
