Hello, I am doing Co-Op as an IT Technician at a local radio station. Two computers right beside eachother had the same issues.

1: There was a BSOD I fixed that by running chkdsk Windows was able to boot fine afterwards, couldn't boot into Safemode, and the systems hanged at agp440

2: I applied a fix recommended by microsoft that makes me boot into the Windows XP installation disk, and access the recovery console I disabled agp440, as recommended. Please note that I had to reboot the PC 6 times because I wasn't able to hit the "R" key to get into the Recovery Console at the menu of the disk, it was just frozen (my issue).

3: Rebooted to find that Windows doesn't start, and that there is a black screen.

4: Assumed it was because I disabled the video driver, so I tried booting into safe mode to reinstall the driver.

5: Safe mode hands at mup.sys microsoft forums suggest that it is because of something similar to chkdsk running, and the system appearing to be hanging, or whatever process needs to load after.

6: Tried to access the recovery console, again doesn't work well so I just allowed the mup.sys thing to finish.

I am thinking that I need to re-burn the Windows XP Installation disk, and do these steps to be sure:

Fixboot

FixMBR

Run off of new disk re-enable service and update drivers

Boot into Safe Mode and check for Malware (Which is why I went through this process in the first place)
Push updates out to the two computers with Kaspersky's endpoint Security solutions.

Maybe doing a system restore, but worried about losing software due to it.

And maybe running SFC /scannow

Is there anything else that you would recommend? I am not quite sure of all the things that I could do to repair damaged Windows registry or anything else.  I am going to leave it trying to boot into Safemode over the weekend, and hope that their is no inexplicable power surges or anything wild going on.

System: Windows XP based system, not sure it's model number or specs but it only has 512MB's of memory making booting into Hirens miniXP solution not viable, however don't know what tools are offered in the DOS programs section so will have to take a look at that.

I would recommend upgrading to windows 7. Windows XP is really old and no longer supported by Microsoft. It also has a lot of security issues and vulnerabilities.

They are old Dell Vostro 4600's. And no as per upgrading I don't the authority to make that call for all systems. As long as the hardware works, it seems like there is a mentality in small-medium sized businesses just to keep it the way it is.

W7 32 bits... but then put at least 1 GB of RAM... otherwise Xubuntu

We have software that won't allow us to do that, we have explored the option. There is however now a bluescreen when booting into Hirens Boot CD (The system has 512MB's of memory but I set the pagefile to the C: drive to 2096-4098). When I was installing Super Anti Spyware onto the HBCD the system crashed and I got an error code:

saskutil.sys  (Along with some memory addresses/hexadecimal values)

pnp649r.sys (Along with some memory addresses/hexadecimal values)

The BIOS readout says that it says is to check if you have adequate space, and to check for driver updates. I assume that it may be an issue space wise, any tips?
