I just checked with my jellyfin vm and its not working either. im going to dig arround in my router settings more to see if something is preventing port forwarding.

Yep, check with that.
Might be a good idea to call the ISP if you can't find anything on your side too I guess.
Check that your NAS didn't change IPs locally and that you're not port forwarding the wrong local IP. That happened to me once lol.

For a bit of background I have a Minecraft server hosted off of my nas in a vm, My server worked with my previous isp however even after port forwarding I get the unknown host error. But I can connect locally.

Using https://canyouseeme.org/ I know port 25565 is open.

I think its a router/isp issue but I dont know how to tell

Any help is appreciated.

What kind of IP do you have?
If you're using a public IPv4, your ISP may split your ports.

However, in general, it'd be better to give more information about the client.
For instance, if the client is using an ISP that blocks Minecraft servers, then that's your issue.

Can you connect through your computer on mobile data, for instance?
You said it worked locally, but with the external IP?

Can you go to canyouseeme.org again and check whether or not your router's WAN IP corresponds to the IP shown there?

Are you using a domain name?

Can you check that port forwarding points to the VM’s internal IP, not the NAS host’s?

Can you make sure the VM has a bridged network adapter (so it’s on the LAN, not NATed inside the NAS)?

You could check if firewalls rules changed on the router or NAS.

Hope one of those helps.

It works if i use it on my local network with a local ipv4 address but if i try to use my public ipv4 or ipv6 address I get the unknown host issue regardless if my client pc is on the same network or on my phones hotspot. I am not using a domain name just my ip address.

Im not sure what that means but it is hosted in a truenas scale vm and it appears on my router as a separate device from my main server.

As far as i know my isp (frontier fiber) doesn't block Minecraft servers.

Thanks for the infos.

I imagine you double checked that your port forwarding rules are active.
Might be worth double checking again.

Can you try opening another service on a different port just to test if port forwarding as a whole is broken? (like a web server or something).
Try to see if that service is accessible from public IP after setting up port forwarding please.

I wonder what activated it.
Weird, but also an understandable feature.
Glad you were able to find the issue!
