They're whatever you want, they cater to both consumers and pros. The 'Pro' moniker is just a carry on from the original Macbook Pro models that was used because back in 2006/2007 they were considered very high end laptops and were used typically by professionals - but thats not to say they aren't used in the same fashion today.

Features that cater more to pro/prosumer are:

- PCIe storage

- High PPI screen

- Multiple Thunderbolt ports

- Relatively powerful terminal input ability

- FCP/etc., great content creation tools and ability

They're just really good laptops. As for the hardware itself, the CPU's and GPU's, motherboards, etc. are all made in the same factories and uses the same processes as any other laptop.

Laptop Lenovo Thinkpad X220 - CPU: i5 2420m - RAM: 8gb - SSD: Samsung 830 - IPS screen Peripherals Monitor: Dell U2713HM - KB: Ducky shine w/PBT (MX Blue) - Mouse: Corsair M60

Audio Beyerdynamic DT990pro headphones - Audioengine D1 DAC/AMP - Swan D1080-IV speakers

The 13 inch isn't very 'Pro', the 15" is though. They're not designed for gaming, you won't see any GTX870Ms etc. A good quad core, an OC'ed GTX750M for Cuda acceleration, Iris Pro for Open CL. They are fantastically build with a rock solid OS (if you don't want to game), but are very pricey.
