Hello everyone! I am new to the forums, but have been a long time subscriber/watcher of the channel.

Today I decided to make a forums account because I am in the process of selling my current PC and am working on a new build and thought that a group of well-versed people would be able to give some decent input.

First off, this is my current pc that I will be selling soon.

FX- 8350 CPU
XFX - DD 7970 GHZ
16 GB Ripjaw 1600 mhz memory

Decent Biostar mobo * not really too important*

Coolermaster HAF-x
120 HB SSD~2TB HDD
some off brand 1100 watt PSU

Now, I have used AMD CPU's for the last few builds I have done and have been fairly happy, but this time around I want to give intel CPU's a shot but to be honest I’m overwhelmed with the 500 different sockets and seemingly unstructured names/numbers attached to them.

This is what I have come up with so far:
Case:
Bitfenix Colossus Mini ATX
Reason: Coming from the huge HAF x the smaller case just seems much nicer for me.

GPU:
XFX R9 290x DD
Reason: I have had excellent experiences with XFX and the warranty cannot be beat in my eyes. As for the actual GPU, arguments could be made that a R9 290 would be better in price to $ ratios. But at the moment the 290x is 4xx on average.

Mobo:

ASUS Rampage IV Gene (1150 or 2011 depending on the CPU I end up with)
Reason: From what i have seen there really isn’t a lot of competition for good Micro ATX mobos.

CPU Here is where I more or less am at a loss for the most part. So far from my research it seems to come down to ivy bridge 4930k vs haswell 4770k~4790k.
*I apologize for any kind of mistakes or misinformation* Dx

PSU :
Corsair AXi Series 760i
Reason: The 80+ platinum rating is very attractive to me.

I would like to hear your suggestions for different things! I’m open to any opinions or recommendations.

I do a fair amount of video editing as well as gaming..thats why im leaning towards the 4770k over the 4930k, but the price difference is not that wide...so I am up in the air about it all.

What do you plan on using this rig for?

See above.

Also, this may be in the wrong section, so feel free to move it if you feel it should be.

I agree, but only to a point. The i5 is great and in the past it hasn't been very necessary for more than it. However now that things are changing a bit i would say if he has the money why not? Honestly games are only going to get more demanding, and watch dogs is a perfect example even if the optimization is bad and that's why it needs so much, i'm sure many other games are going to be poorly optimized too. Hopefully that all made since and still the i5 is great but why not get the extra frames from an i7 if you have the money.

I run my own indie game company called Color Dragon Studios where we are currently making a 2d platformer game called Small Earth.

Go for the 4770k (or 4790k if you are more patient)

The 4930k is more expensive, and really not worth an extra 2 cores unless you do video editing as a job, or are an extreme gamer with $$$$$$ spilling out of your nose.

I'd say go with your money for the 4770k. Get a good air/water cooler and oc it.

That is my general though process, its not an overwhelming amount more, within 100~150 atm in price of each other.

Agreed the 4930k IS more expensive, but in the long term, may hold its value more as applications become better at using the extra cores.

I have heard that the 4770k is a much stronger overclocker, and clock for clock is faster than the 4930k.

My biggest issue with this build at the moment is that the CPU variety on the intel side is very wide. *Which is not a bad thing* but generally speaking when you buy with AMD its very easy lol. But again, I want to try something new.

8 threads is more than enough for the next bunch of years...

It is better to just buy a 4770k now and same money to upgrade when the 8 core 16 thread Broadwell-E come to market

Plus there is no reason applications should use more than 1 CPU core if one is enough power. The point of more cores is not to make applications use more cores, but to have more single-core applications that run simultaneously, aka multitasking.

X79 Motherboards are also generally more expensive than Z87/97 boards. Also some X79 boards might not support the cpu out of the box without a bios update. This may not be the case anymore, but it is worth a mention. If you go for an Asus board then you can update the bios without the cpu installed.
